in order to edit the translation on the emulator you would need to download multiple programs and rewrite the lines yourself, might as well just make your own fan translation at that point instead of fixing some autist's "faithful" translation

Steam version is great if you play The New Thread mod. That's far more fun than the original game.

why the fuck do you keep recommending the new threat mod. yeah its cool, but if its your first time playing FFVII its trash
so many stupid balance decisions, and some bosses have x10 hp which makes a 5 minute intense battle into a 30 minute snoozefest where you have to do the right thing every turn otherwise you are dead and have to restart (depends on the boss, of course)
NT mod is only for people that have played the original at least once.

DS4Windows, remap the controller to keyboard keys, click the hide DS4 option (otherwise it will ignore the remap and just read input directly from the controller)
Did this when I decided I wanted to play the steam version, went back to just emulating PS1 since there's no advantage to the steam version unless you want to play new threat or other mods

I'm now too lazy to bother hooking it up anymore so I play it on my PC with a Dualshock 4. Mednafen is technically the "best" but I use ePSXe just because I have most my iso in *.PBP format and while I could unpack them its just simpler.
