This is actually a plot point I very much disagreed with. If it was a Shinra plot to make the damage worse, it should have concealed that from the player to some extent instead of just straight up tossing it in your face - but then again this is Nomura and subtlety isn't a word he can pronounce.

This game has been great for exposing fake fans of the game. You can really tell who cared and who didn't care about FF7 before playing the remake and after, and its very plain to see that the Remake is much better than the original, its funny.
