Was this the MMORPG with the Fate/ Stay Night promotion? I downloaded it for that reason alone. Then uninstalled it because I realized that the game is just yet another generic MMORPG, aka brainless grinding and repetitive combat.

I played through gen 3, but lost interest as the game moved away from the "fantasy life" aspect. I like the combat, but the fantasy life part has been completely abandoned, it's all adventuring and combat and nothing to balance it out. None of the people in town, going around doing jobs, non-combat jobs, and then coming to the town center and sitting around camp fires together. Playing music. Talking. Telling stories. I remember this one character played a cute girl who wanted to be a mage back before advanced magic was added and went full in doing jobs to go to magic classes. Now they just hand you magic when you start if you want it, but that character was poorer than everyone else because she spent all her money learning basic magic while everyone else was swinging swords and stuff. Did a few dungeons with her where she'd summon her five charges of little frost bolts to fire at enemies one by one. She was too poor to afford mana potions so she had to sit a meditate during the day, and only could keep her mana up without sitting constantly at night when the mana flowed faster.

Just hanging out with Mabinogi buddies and our one mage friend has so many great memories. I went full in Paladin, but she went black knight in gen 3. I remember helping her get the Fireball advanced magic. I have all these stories and adventures and fantasy life aspects I remember from helping her, our friend who loved music being a bard and just supporting us during dungeons, me and two other guys all fighter mode. Everyone was full RP mode because of the mage, she never broke character not even once.

I miss those days. Never been another MMO like it.

How pathetic, you don't even know about OG mabinogi before the gameplay was reworked. You missed out on the greatest most unique combat & leveling system in gaming history.

Only for Gen 1~3
Gen 4 killed it with FH. Then Gen 5~6 or whichever introduced elves shat the bed even more with their retarded ass broken archery. Then G9~G11 shat it even further with alchemy with it being spam Summon Golem and shock to win: the game. And from there on the game just got worse and worse.

Yeah, I guess? I know that some people are into this kind of stuff, but I prefer MMORPGs that do something unique, think Realm of the Mad God.

OG Mabinogi is more unique than realm of the Mad God in every aspect.

How is that?

I play on a private server with a group of friends now that the source code is available, you can just remove summon golem and shock from your server.

OG Mabinogi was a Fantasy Life Simulator with an unforgiving combat system. Dying would level you down, and even if you had the best armor in the game and were a high level, a random low level bear could one shot you if you slipped up. It had horizontal progression on gear, meaning the weapons you get in the first town were still viable.

All gear had no levels behind them, and when you die you have a chance of dropping your loot making the game punishing in a similar way that roguelikes were. People were getting fucked over left and right for not learning the combat system, and the combat system was strategical meaning no matter how strong you get (before they ruin combat), you can't kill enemies by just running up to them and attacking them like in all other MMO's. So even if you were endgame, you still had to use tactics to take down low level enemies or you will die.

The main selling point of Mabinogi was the life simulation & social aspects though, doing jobs and shit, game had things like weddings and a family system, etc. The life skills (non-combat) were so fleshed out that they were their own game and had a lot of depth to them, it caused the community to work together and there was a good portion of the playerbase who spent all their time avoiding combat and just doing things like tailoring & crafting, fishing, etc. Played it like it was animal crossing.

I really fucking love the aesthetic this game has, even the artstyle, sadly it got shitter and shitter as time passed.
Pretty much this , I can't play any another mmo because it doesn't compare to the feeling of wonder gen 1-3 offered, both gameplay and world building wise, hell even later gens until a certain point are still better than most mmos.
For example I really enjoyed being a puppeteer, and that was a late gen "class".

And let's not talk about the login scree, boy the login screen.

Game has no class system, let's say you wanted to level up one of your spells. Instead of just spending skill points, you have to complete challenges with your skill to rank up. So you can't just kill low level zombies to get better at fireball, you have to go against enemies stronger than you and make sure certain conditions are met to get experience with the skill. Classless system was extremely satisfying, you can roleplay as any fantasy class you can imagine, you can be diverse in magic, melee and archery all together if you wanted or specialize, nothing in the game is stopping you from suddenly picking up blacksmithing and then suddenly learning archery. Game has an aging system that realm of the mad god doesn't. You start out as a kid, get taller and older and can rebirth. Games pet system is very unique, you can customize the AI of your pet, ride the pet and send it in combat with you all in fucking one. Fly on your pet, and teach it new skills, level up your pet.

>source code is available
Where? I see several repos but I'd like to know which you guys use, I'm tempted making my own server now.

Mabinogi used to be great, but now it fucking sucks, and the community is fucking dead. Full of the most toxic pay to win pieces of shit on earth. If you don't buy gold to get somewhere in this game don't bother playing it.

that's cool and all, but combat was probably still just clicking on an enemy and a couple of skills and being done with it
I prefer mad god because there the combat feels more interactive since it's essentially a twin-stick shooter bullet hell with RPG elements

Game had a spirit system where you can imbue spirits in your weapon and level up your weapon, and even had a social simulation with your spirit where you talk to it and bond with it and boost its stats. It also had a pretty cool story full with cinematics, and you can make choices in the story which not only affect the story but also give you unique skills. You can learn a transformation as you progress through the story, join the dark side or the light side. I really don't know MMO's that went all out with this shit. All fucking classless which really spices up the gameplay and prevents repetition. The dungeons were randomly generated, and had a seeding system so even the first dungeon in the game had endgame value to people. NO LEVEL REQUIREMENTS for anything in the game. And with the way the combat system is designed, a low level player can help high level players in endgame dungeons because of the knockback system, parrying and stunlocking. Everyone felt so fucking useful in the game while in other mmo's you do 0 damage if enemies are higher level than you. Combat was (was) skill-based. This game was an all-in-one. Chill with friends while learning cooking or making clothes for people. I loved taking a break from a long dungeon and just sitting at a campfire. The whole game was one big adventure.

Non-linear progression for dungeons. Right when you start the game, you can go straight into the hardest dungeon in the game. You don't have to play the game in a linear fashion at all, and you aren't punished for just playing it how you want. You can learn skills in any order, do dungeons in any order, get gear in any fucking order. (if you got money for gear lol)

This is wrong dude. Listen, if you click an enemy in Mabinogi, they can block it. You're now stunned, and they one shot you and you're dead and dropped your gear. To kill enemies (before gameplay rework) you have to use tactics or you will die. If an enemy hits you, YOU CAN'T TANK their damage. If an enemy hits you, you are either dead or your life is at 0% and the next hit kills you. You also can't outheal enemies, as you take damage your maximum life decreases, and healing in this game was unviable regardless. Drink too many potions and your character gets drunk, they were also very expensive. Everyone was walking around wounded the whole game sitting at 1% HP in early Mabinogi. Magic users were always out of mana so couldn't just spam kill everything. When we asy that Mabinogi's combat was unique, we are saying that it is actually unique dude. There is no other game that has the same combat system as OG Mabinogi. Enemies could counter your moves, if you try to block an enemy they can also grab you and get through your defense. You have to use strategy and watch their movements to predict what action they're going to take. No matter how high level or how good your gear was, you couldn't clear enemies by just running to them and attacking.

PLEASE

how do I put this? mabinogi might have the (hypothetically) objectively best combat system of all time, but I simply prefer a combat system that is more reliant on mechanical skill.
same thing with turn-based combat, many people love turn-based combat, but I get quickly bored while playing it, not because it's easy, but because it's not my cup of tea. I guess it was wrong of me to accuse this game of being a generic MMORPG, then again I only played it back in 2017, not when it was much better.
I see these walls of texts and have no idea how to respond, I appreciate that you're going down in detail to explain the beauty of the game

out of curiousity, do videos of first gen mabinogi exist on youtube?

>TFW I was around to play Mabinogi when it first hit the western audience

It was a magical time and I'll never experience anything like it again. I logged on every night and had so much fun for several months. It was like rediscovering WoW for the first time.

MMO's are a dead genre now and we'll never experience the magic of a popular new MMO ever again. If you missed the Mabinogi train than you missed out on something magical.

Depends on what generation you want. There's several online. There's a G11 server before the combat rework, there's servers from before that if you hate elves. Then there's servers that are much later. Google mabinogi server files and find the generation that was your favorite. I'm playing on increased experience rate, double AP. All cash items can be earned in-game through item drops. I just play with a small group of friends. This is the most fun I ever had on a MMORPG, Private servers is the best way to enjoy MMO's because there's no grinding bullshit and you can focus on enjoying content at a great pace.

Play on a private server user, pay to win is removed. Stuff like pets can be bought with in-game currency. Drop rates are increased dramatically. It is even better than OG Mabinogi. I say this because it took me a year to get all pages for a spell, but in private server I got the drop within a week

>you will never play dueling chess
FEEL BAD MAN
>YOU WILL ONLY PLAY INSTANT AND COOL DOWN COMBAT.

Mabinogi was slower paced action combat but everything one shot you if you fucked up.

Is this the game with the cute maid girls?

it was combat chess or go.
>think of all your moves, think of the moves your enemy will make and how to counter them, have to do calculate just right to avoid getting hit from multiple boggies.

Mother fucking windmill used to cost hp.

I started play because of this
youtu.be/KsAfAW9rTOI

>not being deadly all the time.

You die instantly in the game so you have to play perfectly. First you have to be able to predict what enemies are doing, if you don't you will die. If you know the enemy is going to attack you with a slash from their sword. You have the option of using a weapon that has a faster animation than them to hit them first, and stunlock them. You have the option of blocking their attack, stunning them so you can hit back. You can use a counterhit that pushes them off you and knocks them down.

But here's the catch user. Enemies have different behavioral patterns, and can "trick" you. When you activate a skill, it takes a couple seconds before it becomes active. If you use block, you have to wait a couple seconds before the block turns on. Meaning you have to predict what they're going to do, at least 2 seconds in advance. Block prevents you from running but you can still walk. You see an enemy activate a skill (don't know which), but you see them walking. This means they're blocking, so you want to either grab them or use a skill that ignores blocks. But enemies can trick you, they can force their self to walk making you think they used block. Then they one shot you cause you went up to grab them. This gets more complicating when you are fighting 3 enemies at once, that all can one shot you. Requires perfectly execution.

isekai cultivation annie may

Man tell me about it. I fucking love the system in this game and NOBODY else uses it.
