Why don't people talk in game lobbies anymore?

Gaming is unironically dead.
Its not the same anymore, there's no more "worlds" because the tech isn't any more advanced than it was in 2009.
VR sucks balls, and barely any companies aside from maybe Valve are putting money into its development, Alyx was a tech demo.
The games with the best graphics this generation were all PS4 movie games made by unlucky film industry postgrads.
Videogames used to cause so much social and political controversy - now they are totally controlled and push the same agenda as TV and Hollywood.
Videogames are now just entertainment product to be consumed by normalfags, and you're still fucking buying them.
Explain yourself. Now.

Ever since games started adding the ability to mute everyone and hide chats I've never looked back.

because since server browsers died every lobby is filled with BRs, filipinos, chinese, russians and screaming kids.
when server browsers were a thing you usually had the same chill ppl about your age on at the same time every night .
