It's always been shit and I say this as someone who loves the game
why do you say that?
It's got an interesting setting, lore and but that's about it. The English translation is really wonky in some spots, battles take a long time and most of the characters besides Rose and Lavitz are pretty one-note. I still enjoy the game despite it's mediocrity. Would love to see a remaster or rerelease.
Meant to say lore and music.
It was too good and Yas Forums generally has a bad taste in everything.
I want to fuck Meru!
I really love the song that plays if you leave the game on the title screen too long. The game was enjoyable within the context of PS1 RPGs. Somewhere between a normal fantasy RPG and a dragon themed power rangers series smashed into a game. Which really just makes me want a Power Rangers RPG where you play as a custom character that joins a Ranger team and has oldschool Bioware interactions with them.
English translation is crap and the game is insanely slow. Huge pauses in between attacks, battle start sequence takes legit like 40 seconds before anything happens, have to watch a cutscene every time you go dragoon.
I'm literally playing the game right now and I am toggling turbo 90% of the time because of how terribly slow it is.
I've always heard it's like the prototypical generic JRPG
Oh look it's the 57th best jrpg on the playstation
Once you learn all the combos, there's no progression except the story and finding collectibles. It's pretty barebones for a JRPG
Legend of Legaia or Legend of the Dragoon.
Which is better overall and which has a better combat system
>have to watch a cutscene every time you go dragoon.
You can turn that off, bro. Rose even tells you in her tutorial. You're right otherwise though.
Still a fun game. I really liked how they segmented it into separate chapters that slowly build the story before everything comes to a head at the end of disc 3. Sure, it's a little bit simple at the end of the day, but there's something nice about a cohesive story with just a few twists and turns to spice it up rather than a bunch of complicated BS, you know?
I did really like the bit where Rose implies that the Silver Dragoon Spirit was possibly using Shana as a host just to get to her real dragoon, Miranda. It's left ambiguous but it's cool to think about.
Legaia
There's a lot to like.
>dreary atmosphere and music
>colorful world that always feels slightly more washed out then it should
>murder, pillaging, torture and even hints of sexual abuse
>great combat system where almost every attack and spell is an interactive sequence
>youtube.com
>some characters are likable even if they're not very deep
A few things that are not so great.
>really really awfully translated - this is not as bad as it seems though, as the story itself is dirt-simple and the characters are so one-note that you always understand what they mean even if they don't express it all that well
>combat can be slow, so it's balanced out with you never really HAVING to grind at all - every boss is beatable with no grinding if you use items, additions and magic right
>a very strange focus on item-management - no real magic system except for dragoon spells which are very limited, combined with an incredibly tiny inventory means that keeping your bag sorted is often the difference between a win or a loss
>several minigames but none of them really give anything interesting and the games themselves aren't particularly good
Overall a 7/10. Pretty good, but has a fair share of rough edges but if you add some good will it's still a fun romp.
This game could really use a shiny remake on PS5 with real time combat. I think it would do wonders for the brand.
I think part of the reason it feels so slow is because the combat really puts focus on heavy-HP turtleing. All the healing items/spells/commands in the game restore percentages of health meaning that the more you have the more you get, and no abilities of any form do percentage DAMAGE.
This means it's strongly encouraged to bulk up, build for slow patient wins with a bunch of meat-tanks that can out-heal incoming damage.
There's also this mid-disk-one item called a Therapy Ring which gives you a certain percentage of your HP back every turn, and in a game so starved for healing this is a great item. You can even find a second one and equip two party members with them. I swear if a third one existed I'd never take them off.
Outgoing damage is usually based more on player skill than stats anyway, so mastering Gust of Wind Dance and stacking health is usually better than stacking attack power and doing Gust of Wind Dance half-well.
it's fucking trash with garbage dialogue, awful music and a retarded item system and it tries to ape FF7 way too hard
>awful music
Take that back

Name the 56 better ones please, I need more shit to play
>first party sony trash jrpg they didn't even bother to translate properly
lmao
It's one of my all time favorite games and has been for 16 years. It has it's flaws but there's really only one thing that bothers me and that's Shana/Miranda not having additions. They could've had at least a couple like Kongol if they couldn't think of more than 2 or 3.
pretty good story. Combat system is terrible though.
I used to love it but couldn't finish it as a kid because I gradually lost interest on the story. I tried to re-play it as an adult but couldn't get over the Sailor Moon-ey style and the combat system is just a QTE spam.
Because people who invest time in quality games have probably in large part sailed for better pastures
My favorite game of all time.
At its time it was an underrated competitor against giants, today it just doesnt fit modern tastes, its not a fast game, and it wears its heart on its sleeves and doesnt have any tryhard edginess to it. A little naive if you will.
Normally Id say this game is ripe for a remake (I actually have a ton of ideas Ive thought about since my childhood). Its got a lot of rough edges that with polish can really make it shine but the current gaming ecosystem makes me want it to stay hidden in shadows of the past. I dont trust any studio except maybe bluepoint to remake it.
A remaster would be nice but wouldnt sell well, I think.
Pros:
- music
- art direction
- no need to grind
- likeable characters that are simple on the top but more layered if you pay attention to the dialogue
- for a turn based rpg, the combat is interactive, flashy and fun
- the plot is simple but satisfying, a bit vanilla, but has some interesting twists and themes that arent as common, and subplots really help carry it along.
- satisfying combination of serious and cheesiness with the right balance
- nice cutscenes (for its time)
Cons:
- really rough english translation
- horrendous cutscene voice acting
- not a lot in the way of gear/treasure hunting
- no way to deal with random encounters. With qte combo basic attacks and button mashing to power up spell items, this gets tedious
- main gimmick, dragoon transformation, is underwhelming
- underdeveloped minigames/side content
I could go on and on about this game. Id recommend it to anyone except hardcore jrpg fans, as it doesnt offer much to them.
It's easily one of the most overhyped PSX era JRPGs. The only good aspect of the entire thing is music. Everything else, from combat system that is literally just mashing one QTE and trying not to break the pad every time you use magical item, to the encounter rate that is literally bugged if you move characters in certain directions, is a pile of dogshit.
The battle system make random battles excruciating.
>tfw the game broke so many PSP buttons after it's official release that they literally didn't allow it to be downloaded by vitas unless you went through a PS3.
Do your logs get put up even without you submitting them? I don't want to install an addon.
it was okay, but it isnt nothing special, even final fantasy VIII has more interesting combat and setting
