The combat is perfectly fine. The complaints about it are so overblown

I'd say it's one of the best combat systems in RPGs to date
because RPG combat typically sucks, this one doesn't

It's a masterpiece among video games.. Yas Forums is full of contrarian retards that praise VNs and sonic games

I'm 100 hours into death march on an alchemy build it feels just as easy as story and sword at this point, I was like 10 levels higher than most of the quests when I got to Skellige.

yes, TW3 is the best VN I've ever played

just go red tree for extra moves and I-frames

they were smart to market this as a skyrim competitor

>100 hours into
found your problem
why do people fel like they need to do everything in one playthough

Eh, 200 hours in and I love the game but the combat isn't that great. So many stuff is too broken like quen sign.

It isn't horrible, but pretty mediocre. There is not one boss battle that is fun if you don't count Deattlaff which is basically the last boss of the entire game anyway.

I like to keep my quest log clear it gets filled with a hundred things easily, not my fault they set the bar incredibly low so any casual can finish it.

they patched out the really broken shit

I didn't like combat. everything else was kino.

Quen sign is nothing you become an unkillable tank with 20,000 hp doing 4000 damage per hit by the time you get into Blood and Wine.

Good game but the movement feels like you're floating if you know what I mean.

I played this game after DLCs game so I didn't get to see the really broken shit.

Armor for example is completely inbalanced. There is no reason to use other than light armor. The bombs dont do shit and there are way too many useless positions.

it feels shitty at first and then later at times, but not floaty i'd say, source movement is floaty w3 isn't

I know. I did the toxicity level to health build with some great decoction synergies and my health was ridicoulous.

But I played on Death March NG+ and some enemies still almost one hit you so quen is a must unless you wanna keep spamming heals half the fight.

I find that the movement feels like absolute fucking ass after playing a normally functional game. But if I have nothing fresh in mind to compare it to it's actually pretty tolerable.

It's been 5 years, you're still advertising it?

you can switch it in the options to be less floaty

There's a decoction that restores a big chunk of health every time you cast any sign I'm only on NG death march but it's been quite a while since any enemy came close to killing me.

>Step 1: Cast Quen
>Step 2: Swing your sword twice (or three times depending on target)
>Step 3: Roll away
>Step 4: If Quen has been deactivated, return to Step 1
>Step 5: If Enemy is still alive, go to Step 2
Congratulations, you can now kill literally any enemy in the game no matter how high their level is or how low yours is, and as long as you don't get impatient and rush in without Quen then it's LITERALLY impossible for you to die. Bonus points if you have that Undying perk so that even when you die, you still don't die.

Yeah thats the one I used. At the same time I used a decoction that gives me health when I do dmg. After that I have enough to use at least 2 swallows and 1 thunderbolt.

With these secrets I will become a master witchman

Deattlaff and Olgierd are the only ones that counter this. Olgierd is too fast for you to consistently use quen if you get hit and Deattlaffs wave strike brakes quen and usually kills Geralt with it if you dont dodge.

Those are the only fights I died once or twice.

yea this is the real problem. the core unbeatable combat loop is like 2 steps and boring. good vn though

Quen is for amateurs you can skip those steps and still be a god

It was a damn fine game with somewhat lackluster combat. The story more than made up for it, though.

>plays gaem in a boring way
>hurr durr combat is shit

Thinking of getting back into it since I'm reading the books.

Are there any mods that improve the combat? I know there are several combat mods, but people seem to have mixed opinions on them.

The only issue I had is they went to great lengths to provide a bunch of oils and encouraged learning enemy weakness but even on death march it feels completely unnecessary. Still a fun game though, and several times more playable than most jank combat found in RPGs.

The oils help with the spongy enemies in death march it's noticable when you got the permanent oils upgrade and all at superior level

They actually ruined the combat with the GOTY patch or whatever and still haven't fixed it. Fingers crossed though.
Stuff broken with the current retail build:

1. Sign intensity capped purportedly to balance signs, as a result yrden and alternate yrden is COMPLETELY useless now against anything except for spectres. While Igni and Aard are still OP with stacking sign intensity (as they should be), yrden is not OP, it should freeze anything walking into the field completely. Alt yrden similarly should zap for WAY MORE damage than it currently does, it is absolutely useless on death march.

2. Similarly, alt axii is utterly broken and doesn't work properly. It doesn't convert the enemy to fight for you, even stacking sign intensity. As a result ofieri enchantments like possession are pretty much useless. There is proof they use to work from youtube videos, but it doesn't work anymore in the current build. You should be able to convert 2 enemies to fight for you for a long time or until they die, and the axii should automatically jump to another enemy when they die if it works properly.

3. Alt ignii is utterly broken and useless. If it has to be channeled, then it should have a damage advantage over regular ignii, but as it stands it deals almost no damage, only staggers when initially cast meaning there's no reason to channel it. The burn armor benefit is given by regular ignii as well which is instant cast, and the forcing the enemy to drop their shields is done better with axii. It needs to do about 50 times more damage than it currently does in order for it to be decent.

4. The gold find stat on armor STILL doesn't work. It didn't work at launch and it still doesn't work. I've equipped gold find armor and tried looting stuff and selling stuff and you don't get more crowns.

There are a lot more things broken with the combat currently but these are the main ones. Regular and alt aard is fine, regular ignii is fine, regular quen is fine, the rest is broken.

Forgot to add:

5. Ofieri unlocks should persist from regular game to newgame+. Right now there is absolutely no reason to unlock ofieri enchants at all, even if the enchants themselves weren't useless. The reason being that the ofieri camp is among high level Hearts of Stone quests, and really expensive to boot, so you never really get to play with the enchants until you finish Hearts of Stone content, at which point it's only 'useful' for Blood and Wine content. But since you need to unlock it again with New Game+ that means after you beat the regular game you have to do ALL THE UNLOCKS AGAIN. Instead of being able to play the game a second time with immediate access to enchants as you should be able to, you have to grind gold all over again to have the ofieri enchants only be useful for Blood & Wine newgame+. Which is stupid. Newgame+ should let you retain the unlocks, which would make the vanilla experience more fun (if the enchants worked as they were supposed to and weren't useless).
