I mean, that's debatable. The Joel robbing from the world part I mean, The Fireflies are a shit show from start to finish in the game. They jumped straight to extracting Ellie's brain in a surgery that would kill her with no back up plan, killing the only immune person they know of on the off chance they could figure out how to engineer a cure.
Even ignoring that though, "muh cycle of revenge" is one of the hackiest themes to center a piece of art around. Most people who played the first game knew Joel was going to die.

BEST case scenario is he just let them kill Ellie, they shoot him in the back (100% confirmed by collectibles as what they planned to do once off the property) their dumbass "we only get one shot at this" brain operation actually works, and then they get a VACCINE. there's no fucking way they could just cure anyone who already turned. and remember this is 20 years AFTER the outbreak when society has collapsed and these people are all terrorist criminals who bomb safe zones. they wouldn't just hand out the vaccine to anyone, they'd use it as a bargaining chip for power and others would fight them for it. the millions if not billions of people whose brains were already mold at this point would still be a physical threat like they were to ellie and MAYBE after a few of the remaining pockets of humanity in the US killed each other, things would start to get better assuming they could also keep producing this vaccine that emerged from the single sample. (unless there really was others and all those instances failed)
Joel was selfish, but he didn't doom humanity. What remained of humanity had already adapted to the new world. Tommy's town was doing just fine except for outside raiders. Shit like that wouldn't change just because of a miracle vaccine being created.
