I actually loved XIII (it definitely had issues, but it had my favorite combat, character writing, and cutscene direction in the series).
I went into XIII-2 excited for a more refined version of what XIII was. Instead, they threw out everything that was good about the character writing, took all of the strategy out of combat (very early you can catch OP monster allies that render the SYN/SAB roles obsolete), and retconned the beautiful ending to shoehorn a nonsense asspull time travel story with no emotional resonance whatsoever.
I understand that Yas Forums is filled with autistic contrarians, but liking FFXIII-2 is a step too far.
Endgame combat is XIII was fun, but the rest of the game is absolutely dreadful. I liked XIII-2, and LR, but LR was stressful for me.

I dropped the game after Caius and Yeul's backstories were revealed. I could not care less about the cast, and no amount of over-the-top DBZ powerlevel BADAZZ cutscenes was going to change that.
Besides Serah (and the returning XIII cast), all of the new characters are one-note anime tropes "shrouded in mystery" to hide the lack of substance. There's also no meaningful development because the characters are hopping through time and there's different versions of them anyway.
The only exception is Noel's jealousy about Snow, and how he constantly simps Serah trying to get her to leave him. That was actually pretty well written. Everything else about him is just boring future trunks bullshit
The whole story is a garbled mess that makes XIII actually look coherent by comparison.

>they were walking caricatures That's how they start. If you had actually finished the game and/or paid attention you would see that they all develop significantly over the course of the story as a direct result of accepting each other for their faults.
Snow is the best example of this. He starts as a complete dumbass parody of the shonen hero, talking a ton of shit and never backing it up. Then Hope calls him out on his shit, attempts to murder him, almost gets himself killed in the process.
For the first time in his life, Snow gets an opportunity to actually be a real hero. He quietly, humbly injures himself to save Hope, carries his comatose husk around for an hour, and drops the fake hero routine and becomes a proper Chad.
Throughout the rest of the game, you see a far more rational, humble version of Snow who's still enough of a Chad to make fun of himself for his old idea of heroism.
