BF4 feels like the scope is so much larger than any of the BF1/V. They just completely lost the ball.

It was a marketing fail, regardless of “muh politics” the trailer failed to present something that would interest people, and the director’s response saying “then don’t buy it”, may be the “principled” response if you agree with him, but it’s isn’t the right one if you want to sell something lmao.

Well it doesn’t help, but furthermore the developers were dumb to assume the interest in a Shooter during WW1 which is interesting and new, would translate into interest for another WW2 simulator.
There wasn’t really that much interest for the game, and its marketing killed its potential.

I feel a little context like kind of does matter, since I'm sure most of us wouldn't be upset over the fact that a woman is on the cover or that you play as one in the game. The fact that they wanted the game to be more "historically accurate" and called many of their (potential) player base as "ignorant" when pointing out how over the top the trailer was a huge factor.

yeah, people fail to realize that (unfortunately) marketing plays a HUGE role nowadays.
Look at bf1, it had a pretty big campaign, tons of action-packed trailers and that's enough to win the average fps player over.
And boom, it became the best selling Battlefield of all time and the first time the franchise outsold the same year's CoD entry.
BF5's marketing was a complete trainwreck from start to finish, with the horrible announcement trailer, the shitting on it's own community and doing these shitty talk shows with whatever the fuck that mutt's name was.
Of course it being a buggy mess at launch didnt help, but bf4 wasnt in a much better state at launch but still sold far better.

Dude how many WW1 games do you know? It was genius for them to choose that setting, you see the trailer you’re immediately intrigued. BFV was another of millions of WW2 shooters, but to make matters worse, a year after COD WW2. Even if people were interested in a WW2 setting on modern engines, that was already delivered by COD. So you’re already on an uphill battle having to convince people to buy something that isn’t new and intriguing, but you start with that dumb trailer and then a bunch of talk shows? I feel bad for the developers, it’s a competent perfectly fine game, but what can they do when marketing literally shits all over their effort?
