I think it's safe to say that Joel most likely dies, and Ellie comes damn close. But the ending to the game can't simply be Abby beating the shit out of Ellie and leaving her and Dina for dead in some abandoned building. (Which, when you think about it, is a pretty lateral move from just finishing them right then and there)
