Mostly because even people who shit on it have to agree that in comparison to the shitshow that was TFA and ROTS, that TLJ at least tries to be SOMETHING on it's own. It has the balls to do something new and evidentally, Johnson had almost free hand on the movie, he basically approached it like an indie drama with a big budget.
That the movie failed in what it tried to be is up to the audience, but it is the only movie in the Disney trilogy that has something going on for it.
