He has abandonment issues, it is a pretty basic case of "If i don't let anyone close then i won't be hurt when they leave". The GFs made him forget WHY he has those issues but he still has them.
Also Quistis was very unprofessional regarding him (and in general, which bites her in the ass when the Assassination mission is nearly botched), which likely annoyed him since going by how SEED is ranked and that canonically Squall probably acted in the optimal ways for each situation he would be rather professional thus clash. Also she is Ultimecia.

No he isn't. He is a loner who doesn't get along with people very well and is socially awkward yet is forced into social situations. The entire point of his character arc is that he is thrust into a leadership position and over the course of the game becomes a true leader that people look up to. It is very basic, man. It isn't some 2deep4u hidden behind 10 layers of metaphors. The story is basically him growing up. Going from shitty little teenager to adult with responsibilities and a "family"
