Not all reviewers like the same types of games, just like not all food critics like the same types of food. If you've never tried peanut butter before and you ask someone who hates it if a butterfinger or snickers is good, they'll say no. That doesn't make them wrong. Understanding the types of games a particular critic likes is just as important as finding a critic who actually knows how to analyze a game.

A lot of the time they seem to be. Having an IQ above room temperature helps to discern exaggerations from actual complaints. Being a person who can recognize the flaws of one of his favorite genres and criticize it helps too. I like JRPGs quite a bit, I've played them for a quarter of a century, so I know well the strengths and weaknesses of the genre.
