The point is that you can't just go around killing hundreds of people and not expect it to catch up with you. Joel's said dozens of times that he's not a good person and did some heinous shit in his past. It's about the cycle of revenge inherent in humanity, how just because you think you're morally justified doesn't mean you are, and when you get your revenge for being wronged you won't actually feel any better. I thought the story was going to be WAY fucking worse, but despite throwing in the tranny as the murderer it's pretty much what I'd expect from a sequel to The Last of Us.
