I've only played Sly 1 and Jak 1, 2, 3, so I'm not exactly sure how true that statement is. Sly 1 was definitely a great experience though. It has lots of visual flair, humor and interesting levels. And the game's finale is a memorable highlight. I think it was a great title and worth remembering, but again I haven't played the others.

I don't want to fuck that raccoon like I want to fuck Ratchet

Sucker Punch didn't want to make Sly games forever, and Sanzaru fucked up 4.
Honestly, Jak's in a similar boat.

It is really, really sad to look at what has happened to those three developers (of Sly/Jak/Ratchet). Even back in the PS3 days I knew something was up. I tried to give Uncharted, Resistance, and Infamous a chance to prove themselves, but those games don't really hold up to scrutiny. They are like a bad memory where everything just became dull and weird. We're still in the afterglow of that era right now and not much has changed. The PS2 was truly one of the last greats, culturally speaking.

Because the production values on PS2 never reached the heights of Ratchet and Jak. Also, most of the missions in Sly are too easy to attract HARDCORE GAMERS.

I mean we are talking about a kids game?

I replayed R&C3 and that shit is so easy. Took like 5 hours to play the entire game and there was nothing that can be counted as hard.

The new Ratchet games are much more harder although they aren't more than kids games either.

I never expected to cry playing a silly cartoon platformer....

Objectively speaking, all 4 Ratchet games are OVERALL harder. Especially to 100%. Do. Not. Deny. You. Shameless. Liar.

One is a sneaking game full of minigames and one is a shooter. Apples and grapes.

100% any of those games is dumb. Both of them just have bunch of hidden collectables that you need to find in order to get to 100%.

Sly 2 was a roller-coaster, and Bentley's whole arc was my favorite of the series. Going from being absolutely terrified of his first mission to saving the entire group single-handedly. Then disaster struck in the end only for him to come back stronger, meet a good girl, and not even think about holding a grudge over what happened despite his insecurities over it.

Oh and Sly 4 never happened.

>Sly 4 never happened.
Why would one ignore the second best game?

I'll be blunt with you I hated the Automatic Platforming. I really didn't like that crap. I don't like easier platforming that makes BANJO look challenging. Jump and circle button, no kidding. It was so automatic that in the cut scenes Sly calls it out.

So platforming is junk. The open world crap? Didn't care for it as it led to open spaces without refined structure. So it wasn't like how other platformers set up their set pieces in a tight linear manner like how Jak did it (in the first game anyway).

And do we need to talk about the concept of the characters and stories? It was honestly very stupid. People can ridicule Sonic the Hedgehog for having dumb stories like he falling in love with a human, but that was one game (one game that also retconned itself out of existence within it's own story).

Sly Cooper's main concept is the story of a thief who is in love with a woman whose job is to send him to prison. And his main nemesis is a sci-fi robot owl that has been around since prehistoric times. It's just stupid. Too stupid even for cartoony animal media. Not a surprise that it simply didn't catch on, Clockwork fits more in Ratchet and Clank instead of Sly Cooper. The other characters aren't impressive Bentley is just the plot device intelligent character and Murray is just the obligatory dumb fat guy. Not impressive.

Not a surprise that overall this franchise didn't last and why Sucker Punch was happy to just give it a permanent ending while moving on to more profitable Cinematic Movie games.

what's wrong with the time travel one? I only played he first level so far but it was fun

Personally I hated that arc. The missions were all stupid and not fun.

Ever watched the ending or what they did with Penelope?

You wanted to know why the Sly games never got as big. I said what I said, +in-game models aren't as good. I explained. You are not satisfied.

Okay. Fuck you. Sly games never got as big because of an evil wizard.

It's mainly just weaker in the story/character department and ends the series on a cliffhanger.

not everyone likes stealth. I quit playing part 2 because of that

REALLY salty shippers.

>Honestly, Jak's in a similar boat.

Jak's situation is different. The people currently working at Naughty Dog now openly HATE cartoony games. Doubt the original team for Jak even works there.

You just posted where it absolutely did

oh so it's nothing?

Once hardware got powerful enough this was bound to happen, the realism meme. Sorry to say but suppose we see realism achieved and graphics plateau? It wouldn't mean the return of art style and stylistic games. Nope, it would only mean that it is possible even for a mid developer to make their own realistic drivel and cash out like Days Gone which was not an impressive piece of work either.

Basically that's all. Game over. I mean sure you'll probably see some cartoony games but most likely those are Nintendo Family Faggot Friendly tier like Windwaker or Mario. Basically no edge or anything. As far as I'm concerned gaming is dead.

>or jak and daxter?
Did it not? Both games had a complete story wrapped up in a trilogy, with one unnecessary game afterwards just to milk the IP's. Both, along with R&C, were quintessential PS2-era platformers that helped fill the gap left by Crash, Spyro and all the smaller 3rd-party PS1 platformers. People still bring them up occasionally, especially with the nostalgia remake-frenzy trending in media now.

R&C only kept going because Insomniac just loved it too much and it took them a while to finally fall for the cinematic meme.

Hot take: I actually liked evil Penelope. It added something to hold interest, especially since she escapes prison during the credits.

Shame neither that nor the Egypt sequel hook never went anywhere.

>especially with the nostalgia remake-frenzy trending in media now.

People only want remakes to these old games on the incoming PS5 because they want better models for SFM.

Dunno, Sly 2 and 3 were definitely a couple of the best games on the PS2. Same with Tak 2, that was an underrated and overlooked great game.

To me ratchet had the strongest series all 3 were very playable and enjoyable with 3 being the weakest imo but I didn't hate it

Sly1 was probably my favorite game out of all of them though, it sucks because I found sly 2 to be quite boring and sky 3 suffered from Sonic syndrome where they added to many characters no one cares about

Jak1 was a very good game but Jak 2 was completely trash and the worst game out of all of em, Jak 3 was fine though

Sly1>ratchet and clank 2>Jak and daxter>ratchet and clank>ratchet and clank 3>jak3>sly2>sly3>jak2

>Hot take: I actually liked evil Penelope

I can agree to this. People romanticize the whole idea of Thieves With Hearts of Gold since Robin Hood. Fact of the matter is that crooks are crooks. And sometimes a good for nothing criminal is just that and they betray or sabotage their relationships. It happens. It happens in organized crime, it happens in drug cartels and it happens in stories like this.

Besides I like the idea of Penelope being an evil inventor. Makes her seem like Gadget from Rescue Rangers but evil (she even has Gadget's color scheme reversed if you take a look at her design from Thieves in Time).

Because stealth is inherently niche.
Sly 1 still had the best balance. Pretty much just a standard platformer with a couple of stealth elements, kept the pacing fast.

Those developers should have been able to make a new IP as good as their PS2/PS1 series, but they just didn't. I wonder if this is because of changes in the company, or design philosophy, or maybe we just weren't the crowd that they were chasing at the time.

And if we're honest the stealth element was hokey and half-assed and never should have been implement. As early as the first level of the first game you have enemies (those seals who throw ninja stars at Sly) who when they see you they don't alert anyone. Only the enemies carrying lights sound the alarms. It's just bullshit. Always felt like Sly Cooper was trying to cash in on Metal Gear which was HUGE at the time with Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 being the main releases on the PS2.
