Replaying this. Everything after Costa Del Sol (except Cosmo Canyon) is a lot more mediocre than I remember.

Playing it for the first time and the first disc is mediocre after leaving Midgar. Disc 2 has been much better.
I just got to bit where Aerith died. Is there much left in the game?

Not quite there yet on this replay but I do remember spending a lot of time on chocobo autism (and liking it).
Just beat it, not a huge graphics fag but it’s still pretty rough to look at sometimes. It’s fine though, and overall the game is still super charming and enjoyable. The turn based combat is fun but I’ve always liked turn based. Overall I think the game holds up pretty well for being only a few years younger than I am.
I’d strongly recommend people replay it after playing the remake. My only complaint is it was a lot easier than I remember, not necessarily a bad thing but I found myself seemingly over leveled for almost everything, despite using the “no random events” feature on the over world a lot of times. I’d say the ps4 version is a great way to re-experience it because of both that and the x3 speed feature. I clocked in at about 35 hours even with that on about half the time and I can tell it would’ve been a slog for a lot of the game without that option.
>Destruct Materia
I'm sure he meant something by this.
I'm replaying it (PS1 version) after Remake and I have to say one thing that is really jarring now is how little the characters interact with eachother in the OG.
Towards the end of the game I feel that changes a little bit, but yeah it’s nowhere near as much as the remake
That scene where Tifa fucks cloud and then gets embarrassed because she realizes everyone was watching definitely caught me off guard. Which I liked
Had the same thought, nostalgia is a powerful fucking drug. I still love the game, don't get me wrong, in fact I'm still enough of a fag to call it one of my favorites- if not my all time favorite. But man 10 year old me must have had a stellar imagination to fall in love with the OG characters as much as I did, cause reading through the game now is fucking- as you said- jarring. It's also hilarious to think that back in 97 this is what a deep character focused adventure looked like.
>deep character focused adventure looked like.
yeah this is exactly what I thought when I was a kid and teen too, and FF7 (and FF in general) had this reputation for great storytelling and great characters
but once you leave Junon the character interactions really die off and it becomes more of a linear set of fetch quests where characters only interact, if at all, with Cloud directly for the most part
But Disc 1 is pure kino all the way til the end.
I'm replaying it too on the PS4 and having a blast. Going back and forth to do all the optional stuff like the Fort Condor fights is a bit of a slog but luckily there's a 3x speed mode to alleviate it. OP is gay.
I think the showdown with Dyne was the last kino moment in Disc 1 before Aeris death. There's a lot of gameplay inbetween there that is decidedly not kino.
man, some of those timings of when you had to go back to fort condor to get all the rewards. Shit's messed up
objectively wrong
>Cosmo Canyon
>Rocket Town
>Gold Saucer
>Wutai
all have party members talking to each other and much of it is different depending on the party composition
I'm playing the New Threat mod and they added an NPC that pops up every time there's a new Fort Condor battle that teleports you back and forth. It's a godsend.
I always kind of lost interest after Midgar, or at least the flashback in Kalm. That setting was so cool and easily worth a whole game to itself.
>(except Cosmo Canyon)
It's the contrary for me. On repeated playthroughs I find the first visit to Cosmo Canyon to be a huge slog. Then again so is Kalm's flashback and Mt. Nibel somewhat. Rocket Town is short, Wutai is cool.
Disc 1 is by far the longest
Cosmo Canyon was pretty good. I think it's just a shame that the whole thing is contained to just that one dungeon. Even if we didn't know about Dyne at all, the intrigue was first started with North Corel, and it's also the basis of why Barret hates Shinra so much
yeah there are moments that were designed to have you miss out on fights or fail outright if the Fort doesn't have money. There's a few that literally have you come back from there just to talk to a story related character or interact with something to advance the plot and then you have to go right the fuck back lol
they take turns talking with Cloud, they rarely talk to eachother at all. Only one I concretely noticed was Vincent telling Cid they should go to their rooms in Gold Saucer.
Currently, what mods are good for the pc version?
Well with the first episode of the remake we now do have it as the setting for a whole game. But in all seriousness, a full jrpg set in a dieselpunk city sounds cool
>beat FF9 the other week
>was fucking amazing one of my favorite games now
>playing ff7
>struggling to find motivation to continue in cosmo canyon
So FF7 was just shit this whole time? It really was nostalgia?
Nope wrong again, all of those areas I mention have them talking to each other at points. Even that bit you just referenced at Gold Saucer has the whole party having a meeting.
Ninostyle character models and Satsuki graphics mods look great, but New Threat is a strong recommend for anyone who's played the game before.
You do that condor shit yet? I remember that being particulary annoying.
It has a very strong start but weak middle
9 was always a high point of the series but it came out at an awkward time right before the PS2. 7 gets a lot of 9's well deserved praise IMO.
It shows its age now for sure. Push through til the end of Disc 1 that's where it got good for me.
In the next episode of the remake, Sephiroth will learn space compression (fuck time compression, that shit's gay), and will combine costa del sol, cosmo canyon, Gold Saucer, Nibelheim and Rocket town in to one mega city
Based zoomers, IX is widely considered the worst PSX entry and one of the bottom three FFs overall.
you don't get it, play those scenes again. They don't actually discuss things together. They say like one or two points and rarely get any responses. There is no dialogue, as in there is no talk involving two speakers that doesn't involve Cloud. This obviously changes when he's removed from the party for a bit, but it's still very lame and never brings actual character development or relationship development into play among the characters.
Even if you hate 9 how could you say that when everything past FFX exists
Its been a while, how much actual time is spent just walking on the overworld and such during the next few parts? like realistically if they cut off some of the fat how far could they get?
Remako upscales the backgrounds but the guy making it is working on an important update to be released Soon™, so I'd wait for a bit for a replay. Use New Threat and . Ninostyle's Chibi models are fucking great but I hate the rest of it, ie battle models and the like. Look ugly and jarring as fuck to me.
That’s the materia you need to beat him
>zoomers
>PS1 JRPG from literally 20 years ago
lmao
>widely considered
Why would I care about shitty wrong opinions? What a retard, I bet you liked X better.
>Even that bit you just referenced at Gold Saucer has the whole party having a meeting.
Isn't that just
>"Barret lets go have fun"
>"Nah"
>"Ok everyone else lets go have fun"?
>how much actual time is spent just walking on the overworld and such during the next few parts?
Probably not as much as you think. That game fucking moves, dude.
I agree with this user.
You're trying to tell me Barrett would have no reaction to Cait Sith joining the party? I udnerstand Yuffie and Vincent doing shit all because there optional. But the lack of party motivation and interaction is large complaint I have with the game.
what the FUCK
No, I get it, you're just wrong. There may not be a whole lot compared to the intro but it's there. I'm literally playing through Disc 1 now.
>zoomers
>PS1 JRPG from literally 20 years ago
Hey man, my first RPG ever was FFVII when I was 12, 8 years ago.
I also found it weird that, given how excited Barret is about Cosmo Canyon, he didn't say anything or respond at all to Bugenhagen's demonstration of the lifestream in my game. I had him in my party but the emphasis seemed to be on Yuffie.
Speaking of Cait Sith, the whole fucking interaction with the Keystone almost feels like parody it's so bad. Motherfucker literally just says "Haha, let's just pretend this didn't happen!" and then casually drops the fact that they fucking KIDNAPPED Marlene and everything just moves on. Then the fucking appearance of Cait Sith #2 showing up literal seconds after the first one is destroyed in the temple, just strolling in from off screen during what is supposed to be a dramatic scene where Cloud is losing his fucking mind. Shit is beyond comical, even for 97 standards. I get that this was Squares first foray into 3D story telling, but holy shit some of the scenes are beyond rough.
yeah Cait Sith will always be fucking garbage
Yeah, they look like their official artwork but 3D. Again, some like but to me it looks genuinely fucking horrible. A shame because the Chibi models are nice, except Barret's eyes holy shit they look so weird to me.
shouldve just been a turk, but they probably didn't want too many humans
that reminds me, Vincent has basically nothing to say to the Turks
Jesus, Barret needs a serious rework there.
He really needs to fix Tifa's shoulders, they're bigger than Cloud or even her breasts
