Roy

FE, always have been.

Banjo Kazooie

Ice Climbers

Corn.

that red hatted fuck all the way at the start of the list, whose this fat red luigi faggot?

Marth and Roy in melee were peak "literally who"

I thought they were anime characters who got added

Terry

Definitely one from Fire Emblem. If it hadn't been for Smash, the series would most likely be far more obscure than it is now.
From the bunch, I'm going to say Roy because his game is still Japan only. Corrin and Byleth are both from modern, relatively well selling releases.
Otherwise, Terry, Ice Climbers, Dark Pit, and Richter are also good candidates

I’d argue Mr. Game & Watch.
If he wasn’t already in the game would there be even one single person who would request for an amalgamation of the LCD characters in the Game & Watch handhelds to be a character?

Nah, Game and Watch is in Nintendo’s top 5 franchises and was getting releases all the way through the DS era and still gets references in modern titles.

its hard to actually judge since smash has made the characters inanely popular beyond their original games.
like captain falcon is, by far, known more for smash than he actually is f-zero, mostly because they haven't made a new game in over 15 years. but he's not a literal who because everyone still does know him, even if its for a part of him that doesn't even show up in the actual games
i'd still go with the FE characters though because virtually nobody gave a single shit about the series until recently

Roy.
Why not but Eliwood instead?

I mean, I did like twelve seconds of research to find out they were from a game I hadn't played or known about. Then it lead to me finding emulators and trying to play one of them in Japanese (I honestly don't remember which one). I loved it despite having no idea what was going on.

The bear from the cereal box. I forgot his name, but I think he had a racing game on Xbox or something.

At the time of inclusion, it is objectively Roy. Currently, when taking Smash into account, it's probably Shulk, as he's often overlooked by casuals despite having one Smash game under his belt prior to this. Depending on how recognizable you think Richter's Rondo appearance is compared to his SotN artwork. I know some people get pretty defensive over the idea of Richter being the biggest who currently among the cast but I am trying to account for just how much Smash has done for the recognizability of everyone else, while this is his first game in. I still think they could beat some FE characters since they blend together aesthetically.

Dark Pit slips by because he's literally Pit. Palutena is technically the namesake of the series, made a cameo in Brawl, and is a popular character for casuals because she's a cute girl.

I think G&W fits a proper "Nintendo history" niche along with Da Cunt Dog and R.O.B. that people are likely to remember, even if it's just from the Game Boy G&W remakes or previous Smash trophies. Compare that to Corrin and some other FE lords who didn't even have a fucking localized game at the time they joined Smash.

Based forced Disney shill meme poster

Melee came out in 2001 and FE7 was in 2003. Eliwood, in his younger form, probably didn't even exist yet when the roster was decided
Plus, Hector is the best pick for FE7 anyways

Every single Fire Emblem character.

this

lucas is kinda inherently more of a literal who than ness since his games was released worldwide

Joker

C. Falcon, Lucas.

So you did not play it on release.

Bingo Kablooey i think his name is?

Also, there would probably be requests for an amalgamation character since that’s how some would want Rhythm Heaven to be represented as a fighter.

Lick smooth shota taint

Maybe but they've been a part of Smash for 19 years, with their absence from Smash 4 being a common topic of discussion. Or is Smash itself not meant to factor into discussion?

This one irks the shit out of me since there's three decades of fantastic SMT characters/music that should have been there first, but demi-fiend and Hawk are the most literal whos with no recent games for Atlus to shill.

Game and Watch Gallery 2 is the first videogame I ever played. Good times.

While the idea of Captain Falcon as a playable fighter was ridiculous, F-Zero itself wasn't really a literal who franchise. Lucas is kind of difficult to gauge.

it's because sakurai loved persona 5
there was a whole interview that talked about it

Neither Marth's original games nor Roy's were ever released in English so no, it is likely that user didn't play it on release.

FE characters

Roy, Lucas, and/or Captain Falcon.
It's hard to rank tough, since some have a smash boost (Falcon, Roy) and some are memes (mother 3). It would be easier to measure who is the most Who franchise in the game. (That F-Zero, since only Captainf Falcon is kept popular and relevant)
It's not fair to split Richter into Rondo and Symphony while measuring popularity.
It's still Richter.

I know Game and Watch Galleries came out for the Game Boy but how much of it’s later success and notoriety can be attributed to G&W being in Melee?

I fucking hate the smash community

Mr. G&W appeared on Wario Land 4, maybe Nintendo was trying to revive it?

Dark Pit isn't that much of a literally who because anyone with brain cells can extrapolate the fact that he looks like Pit but Dark means he's from Pit's game and some kind of clone.
Pit himself may be one though, it's not like Kid Icarus was some flagship title in the NES days and Uprising, while phenomenal, didn't make that much of a splash.

That's also likely true, but I'm betting a lot of it is Sega shoving it down as many throats as possible. Joker/P5 was shilled in everything from Smash to Sonic to SAO to Catherine to Identity V to Another Eden.
Like I didn't even mind P5 all that much, the vanilla game was fine for what it is, but goddamn that's ALL Sega ever does now.

Mewwho. Muppet tiger. Frog dog thing. Hell. Take Pikachu out too.

well that yakuza and valkyria
