They didn't do it for no reason, they did it to keep player retention up so the game doesn't die because of a lack of content. Splatoon isn't getting anything new for a long time and if you think so you're an idiot. They just confirmed they're currently dedicated to updating Animal Crossing.

Probably to try and pull in some people who just now bought a Switch to play Animal Crossing. Hopefully they will keep doing reruns since it is kind of bad to block any new players they pick up from having easy access to easier gear optimization.
