Were games really better before or did people just have worse standards?

I would definitely say that Sonic games on the genesis were better than Sonic 06.

they were filled with promises of what today could have been. so far it’s been okay, i guess.

this generation is full of remakes
this means that video games were better before

Old games are mostly worse.
You don't see literally anyone talking about Centipede or Asteroids. You don't even see them talking about Nintendo/Master System games much. You have to get to like SNES/Genesis, and even then it's only a handful of classic games that are discussed like Chrono Trigger, FF, Sonic, SMBW.
Last year alone we had RE2make, Sekiro, DMC5... and that shit is better than like anything that dropped in the first like 5 gens

>you don't see people talking about old game

not really, but they were better in different ways.
Back then it was more about games that fucked things up the least, in the present it's more about games that try to look perfect and fail.

Yeah, and that shithole is dead. Way to cement is point

The state of video games reflect the state of society, how it functions and the way people think/their values.

Take for example "soul vs soulless" it's just being able to sense what the state of everything was back then and compare it to now. Old games are CRAP if you compare them to new when it comes to graphics or whatever but the substance behind them is crude and meaningless unlike old games. Where as old games were made with fun in mind now they're just about generating income and nothing else, business, numbers on a screen. They have no messages in them beyond whatever propaganda is popular now or memes.

Again. The problem is people not games.

Go play them and see for yourself. You can only gain so much from listening to others. That being said, yes they were overall better. I still pickup old games I never played in my youth and I still have a lot of fun with them.

>and that shithole is dead
Except it's not. Just because it's not as fast as Yas Forums doesn't mean it's dead, newfriend.
>his
lol

most of the games from the 90s were shit. that said, this gen we have to deal with so many polished turds... AAA titles that look fine but aren't at all fun, and/or are just scripted movie sequences.

It's only like that for the sake of the picture.

Yes.

im a 23 yo zoomer and when i play old games be they DOS or whatever I can always feel there's more substance to them

it kinda feels like time travel you're in another place and time where you're happy even if you're playing pixelated stuff that don't look at all real in comparison to the cutting edge 3D graphics of today. If they could find a way to replicate this 'substance" in modern games it won't just save the industry but propel it to unseen before heights where everyone benefits be it producer or consumer.

>look fine but aren't at all fun
its just like how before the boxart of old games looked epic and the game itself was nothing even remotely similar. the formula just changed skins but still remains.

It's dead lol. It's like /lit/ tier.

I give zero shits about gwaphics, but in terms of raw gameplay, new stuff is mostly better aside from a handful of exceptions like Quake and Ninja Gaiden still being awesome. From a purely gameplay perspective, games have improved.

Yes
Playing PS1 games on a CRT was pure SOUL

What game is that lad even playing?

A very poor analogy. user is essentially saying that the modern AAA game is flash over substance. The box art of an old game (any game, really) does not affect the graphics or gameplay of a game. Please explain to me why you think box art being an interpretation of the game and the actual gameplay/graphics are the same thing.

I was talking about how generic games were. And how it's a good thing.

Ince you start getting into where they are from, what race they are and if they like penis or not. It harms the game.

It's much better to have pure gameplay over

Sjw shit these days. Or muh graphics.

They're both scams anyway.

newheads will call you a nostalgia fag for even SUGGESTING that games have gotten worse even though they really have

Indeed, goes in line with what I said here

All I'm saying is I haven't seen an FPS since the original FEAR came out that comes anywhere close to surpassing it.

There's good games from then and there's good games from now. The issue with modern games is that the AAA trash is the most popular and at the forefront of people's minds, so people will more often associate modern games with that trash.

Maybe they should try praying over the product or during it's making? Sounds silly but positive vibes and all that. If game development is a soulless automated process then the game no matter how much content it has or work has gone into it will feel soulless in the end thus turn off people instead of getting more to play it and keep coming back to play it.

Take COD for example they shit out new games constantly. That's what big business is doing now trying to quickly finish what they're doing now so they start working on what's next instead of making what they're working on now have substance otherwise nobody will be hyped and want to buy the next.

I enjoy older games more because you can start a new game and play right away. Starting a new game these days is such a pain in the ass, you always have to go through a tutorial and dialogue that no one gives a shit about

In a lot of ways, yes, they were better, there are some good games today, but a lot are mediocre, and there are problems with modern games that weren't a thing in the past, or that weren't as bad as in modern gaming.

Just saying if people had fun making a game the more people will pick up on it and have fun themselves or keep coming back to it.

Esoteric I know but think about it. When these now old folks made games they didn't do it just for money but also fun.

Not him, but I always get a kick out of the nebulous unqualified "Style over Substance" """argument""" replete with no evidence. Games today have just as much substance, and often offer more in terms of raw gameplay. Although the approach to making games is mostly much shittier and more cynical, the products are occasionally quite good.

That's fine, I'm just explaining why user's analogy is retarded.

>i cant understand thing so therefore it is poor
>user is essentially saying that the modern AAA game is flash over substance
>please spoonfeed me i was born after 9/11
