There's only a few characters iconic for video games as a whole, and then every major genre has its own icons. These are characters that when the vast majority of people think of the genre or the platform or something these characters will be thought about
Mario, Pac man, sonic are iconic as video game characters as a whole
Crash Mario and Sonic are iconic as platformers. Banjo isn't
Banjo Mario and Link are icons of the n64
Crash and Lara and Cloud are icons of playstation
Masterchief is the icon of xbox
Doom is iconic for fps
