No it's a good game. A lot of people shittalk it and DQ in general for looking generic. It's fun though and actually has some neat stuff you wouldn't expect.

DQ games are rpgs from the 90s... made after that era with new graphics.

In monster designs? For the most part sure, FF still has some good monster designs but overall I like DQ more in most respects. Dragons are pretty bad though, they don't feel threatening in any way, especially the Dragon Lord.
In the actual games and everything surrounding it? Not really. It all feels like a Groundhog Day scenario just with a new coat of paint. It feels like not a single thing has changed since the Famicom except now you don't have random screens pop up for random encounters and instead see the fights.
When it comes to character design every major character looks straight out of Dragonball because that's Toriyama's style. I swear half the characters in the series are Trunks or his cousins on repeat. For the most part he's been getting better about it but it's really annoying, though he's great at making old men and really attractive women look distinct, it's just the younger men who all look the exact same and it's maddening.

The only DQ I played was XI and I couldn't even bother to go through a complete playthrough.
I love the monster-design and battles, but the exploration is a chore.
Is there a more classic DQ that focuses on battles ?

At this point they're completly different series. DQ is the one who set the formula for every JRPG but FF just does its own thing nowadays, as well as the other JRPG's which try to set themselves apart in some way.
