Hexen/Heretic thread. Your thoughts?
hexen sucks, shit level design and it takes forever to unlock weapons.
heretic is pretty fun, basically doom with a dark fantasy skin.
I'd rather play strife over them though.
Hexen has excellent level design and you get all the weapons by the beginning of the 3rd hub. That's not even including your inventory items are might as well be new weapons.
>Hexen has excellent level design
>shit level design
The only people who think its bad are the idiots who can't remember closed doors they passed by and get lost as a result. I'll say it again: Hexen has excellent level design. Deal with it.
ok baiter
Okay idiot.
ADHD kid please go
stop samefagging
Hexen was fucking hard. Way harder than any game I've ever played since. It was an actual struggle to beat that game.
>less than a minute apart
any games with level design as hexen?
its amazing, i want more of it
post timers don't lie
always played Hexen co-op, had a lot of fun with my older brother and cousin
>1 minute apart again
>samefag and newfag
Only played the first episode of Heretic. Solid level design, crap weapons, enemies, and music.
>again
Your first accusation of samefag was of two posts less than 1 minute apart. There's no "again". Are you brain-damaged?
You retarded, m8?
that's not how post timing works newfag
Such fun games. I want more sprite-based medieval fantasy first person games.
Uh huh. Here's your last (you) from me, savor it.
Did you just imply that two posts within 16 seconds of each other are the same person?
>crap weapons, enemies, and music
Why do you think that?
The weapons just felt slow and weak. The wand was a slower non-hitscan pistol, the crossbow was a horrifically bad non-hitscan shotgun, etc. The enemies lacked the strategic variety of the Doom games, being basically reskins of the simpler enemies. The music is just really bad.
samefag
I think it's id software's next game
Simply saying 'it's just bad' or 'lacked strategic variety' means nothing, sorry, you need to explain why. Also the Wand is hitscan and is actually statistically stronger and fires faster than the Pistol. The Crossbow does require more of a melee approach than the Shotgun to get the full damage but what it does have over the Shotgun is enemy knockback.
Mechanically Heretic's enemies are far more sophisticated than Doom's. Gargoyles for instance could literally fly circles around a Caco or Pain Elemental, Golems don't suffer from not being able to hit you in melee range like a Pinky, Nitrogolems have far deadlier homing projectiles compared to Revenants, Undead Warriors' attacks have a chance to be empowered causing way more damage, Disciples have a spread projectile attack and a single Ophidians attack fires in a burst of 3 neither of which is in Doom, Iron Liches feature 3 different attacks with mechanics not present in Doom (a segmented column projectile on the Z axis, a projectile that splits into many new projectiles upon hitting something, and a homing whirlwind that knocks you around), the Maulotaur can dash at you and fire a stream of fire that trails along the ground, ghost enemies immune to physical attacks, and probably more I'm not thinking of off the top of my head.
Enemy health matters. Doom zombies and imps take less time to kill with a pistol than golems and undead warriors do.
Gargoyles are clearly more analogous to lost souls, not cacos/pains. Would Doom be fun if the predominant basic enemy of the early levels were lost souls, with some pinky demons and triple-health imps scattered around?
Literally the best Doom clones.
>Gargoyles are clearly more analogous to lost souls, not cacos/pains.
Wat? That doesn't make any sense.
Hexen has shit combat, the weapons are shitty melee or shitty projectiles
>Wat? That doesn't make any sense.
They're tiny flying enemies that charge at you and do melee attacks. How are they not analogous?
>Gargoyles are clearly more analogous to lost souls, not cacos/pains
The comparison was for flying enemies who fire projectiles at you. Lost Souls are melee exclusive.
They don't charge at you, they just use projectiles and the basic melee attack, like a Cacodemon.
There's two kinds of Gargoyles user, one charges, the other fireballs. load up e1m1 again and see
>Enemy health matters
You might want to check Doom vs Heretic enemy health stats, you'll find that doom has far more enemies with 300+ health than Heretic. In fact Heretic's regular, non-boss enemy health caps at 280 with the Ophidian, which is roughly half that of a Hell Knight, which is a mid-tier enemy in Doom.
