Finished my first jrpg

Holy fuck, this was such a great game. I actually think it's better than every EarthBound inspired game I've already played (Undertale, Lisa, YIIK which I pirated as a joke).
The atmosphere is sublime, it felt surreal without feeling like it's "wow so random!". It felt like a grand journey that's still grounded in a sense of just a kid with a baseball bat on an adventure.
I've never played a 'traditional' jrpg before this (other than Pokemon) and I'm wondering why people hate turn based combat so much? I thought it was fine. It felt fast-paced, the variety in battle music was excellent, and later in the game you actually have a lot of tension and have to make split second decisions thanks to the rolling HP meter.
To me, the turn based combat here was no different from real time games I've played where all you do is mash Attack to death like Witcher 3 and NieR Automata.

I think my favorite thing about the game was the pacing. It always felt like there was such a huge and amazing variety in the locations of the game, and that there's something new around every corner. You never spend too much time in one place and the game manages to stay interesting till the end.

The game also made me feel really nostalgic even though I've never played it before. I don't consider myself a soy_boy, but some parts almost made me tear up. Moonside and Magicant were the highlights for me.
Any other older jrpgs I should check out?

im guessing your favorite is 1, right?

Based zoomer. Try Chrono Trigger it's also a good early jrpg that's well-paced, short (something like 15-20 hours) and a decent amount of QoL like no random encounters

>unironically thinking fucking Mother 1 would be a better game for someone who's never played a jrpg
the absolute definition of being a needlessly contrarian faggot, kill yourself

lol no
mother 1 fucking sucks and mother 3 is separate thing all together

OP, what are your thoughts on Nintendo's greatest villain?

Attached: 1567644896990.jpg (2976x4175, 3M)

not him but Mother 1 has the best and spookiest, most unnerving and dark atmosphere. It's a decent game if you can bear with it but like games like say Metroid (NES), it is an awful place to start and you really need to work with the aged design of the game to appreciate it as it was fresh when it came out. EarthBound has aged 100x better

The 1st Mother doesn't bank on a quirky atmosphere it's beauty is on how well it executes the mundane, it's hard and a grind just like being an adult, and the best melody series wide

I prefer mother 1 to earthbound but don’t pretend like the grind is fun

Mother 3 is the best JRPG ever made.

the apple kids music is a funky jam. I will listen to it when I take a shit

They're all masterpieces so who the fuck cares which one is the best?
Like imagine getting three of the best meals in your entire life right in a row and then sitting there trying to split hairs and debate which one was the MOST best meal in your entire life.

I never said the grind is fun, I just think it best iterates the worst part of growing up, Mother 1 is to me the best rendition of the midwest thus far and really hits home early 90's America without banking on being too flashy I love the trilogy but Mother 1 is the best imho

so this is the power of contrarian Yas Forums

Heard good things about Chrono Trigger. Either that or the original FF7 is next on my jrpg list.

I liked him. I'd been spoiled thanks to Smash that he's gonna be the bad guy (and that he returns in Mother 3). Seeing him show up at the final fight was still a trip though, ESPECIALLY with that absolute banger of a song which bait and switches you with 8bit going into hard rock. Didn't know the SNES had a soundchip that good.
The Giygas fight was the best final boss fight I've played in a game. I had half my party dead and just wanted to win so bad and when user kept praying. hit it was a kino moment, I'll remember it forever. I can definitely see the influence it had on Undertale too

I feel you, only mother 3's final battle hits harder ;_;

A remix of best song in the game coming through.

Why do people keep saying that Lisa is like Earthbound? I played a shitton of Lisa, saw a lot of footage of Earthbound (also AVGN review) and I don't see any resemblance.

Do I have to play it to get it? Can someone point out the "inspiration"

>saw a lot of footage of Earthbound (also AVGN review)
Oh no no no no Ahahahahahahahaha

Based, I absolutely loved the "(You) kept praying" bit and it's something letsplay fags will NEVER understand without playing the game.

Nigger
I never said that I "experienced" Earthbound
I didn't say I'm a fan of it or anything

All I said is that I saw footage of it and from what I saw it doesn't seem similar to Lisa, and that was all I said because it's true and that's all there is to say.
Do you have to be a fucking wojak-spamming faggot?

Also no I won't play it, I hate random encounters and 999 easy battles with the same enemy
Fuck off and die alone

>letsplay fags will NEVER understand without playing the game
Who gives a shit?
I don't care about fucking Earthbound, I care about LISA and that's why I asked a question about LISA which by the way does not have any 4th wall breaking gay shit or "all the characters you helped come to help you just at the right time" shit you fucking manchild

best fucking GAME ever. whats so insane is the quality of work that went into the sounds and music

i remember being hit with the Enter Your Name music for the first time after renting it when i was 10 years old and being like 'what the FUCK is this NOISE'

but eventually i had to give up the rental cart and full buy and replay from the start (you couldnt buy your rental carts yet in those days) and by that point it all made sense and was just groovin' holy shit

dont really love the tone of M3 in comparison. without as much grounding in reality it just never resonated as well, plus i was almost 20 years older playing it and didnt have the room for wonder like the mid 90s. plus the alternate composer while still good had so much less style and nuance

everything about the tone in eb is so cohesive compared to m3. makes m3 look like one of the chimeras it pits you against

still good, but EB is the true GOAT

>EarthBound
>random encounters
HAHAHAHAHAHA LAUGH AT THIS RETARD
Imagine typing all of that seethe when you don't even know what you're talking about.

By the way, Lisa is a mediocre game. I finished it. It's extremely janky, the battle music is bad, and it uses cheap emotional punches as its only narrative hook. The gameplay in EarthBound is 100x better, Lisa's battles are barely better than the most mediocre of jrpgs other than giving up limbs and all limiting your moves which is cool in theory but an absolute nothingburger

Literally got every single thing wrong here, real boomers played this the first time on ZSNES with their keyboards on a shitty Compaq PC

Okay they aren't random, you can see them on the map and dodge them (and be underleveled)
That doesn't change the fact that you have to dedicate a gigantic portion of your playthrough to fighting similar enemies over and over again with little to no difference between them. That's that shit jrpg game design that I despise.

LISA has all unique non-repeated fights aside from 2 areas with very optional snakes and shadowy figures which are only an obstacle and offer no exp

>Lisa's battles are barely better than the most mediocre of jrpgs
Looks like it's you who haven't played the game
>20 party members with very different strategies, not just different damage numbers
>myriads of party compositions with their own strengths and weaknesses
>abilities combo and synergize with each other
>bosses are actually susceptible to status effects and their use is encouraged
>there's more status effects than just endless reskins of "enemy can't attack on this turn" stunlock

>cool in theory but an absolute nothingburger
It changes the entire game and allows replayability you colossal retard

>cheap emotional punches
Just end your life
You've never written anything coherent in it nor should you criticize any sort of narrative

FOOD ANALOGY

>similar enemies over and over again with little to no difference between them

the regular enemies in EB are one of the best parts of the game you worthless protoplasm

They would still be that if you'd fight each of them only once and the game would improve substantially
it's just filler

How do I give OP Reddit Gold?

What did he mean by this?
