A huge problem today is lack of education in the field of lighting design. Dudes can get the most advanced ray traced lighting and shadows but if they're retarded when it comes to design and direction it ain't gonna mean shit. And pretty much 99.9% of modern game devs are shit with design and direction.

reeeee. makes me mad because there are so many examples of classic movie tier lighting in vidja right up until the tech actually got convenient to deploy. mgs2 is a personal favorite of mine.
Because all current engines already give you the part of walking in 3D environment. There are so many walking simulators because most of these devs are artists experimenting with the media, not programmers capable of handling jump physics, for example.
