Free, easy to use. Same as skype was. People used skype in the exact same way a few years ago, and msn before then. As microphones have become more commonplace, people want to talk more than they want to type, so no one wants to bother typing shit out in game. The reason it's only happened now is because of that, and the free, simple to use interface. Teamspeak vent and mumble existed, but guess what? You had to pay for those servers, and unless you were hardcore (lol) you didn't, so you stuck to whatever free shit, IRC at most. But discord being free, easy to use, good enough quality for normalfags, and now having videochat? There's no reason to ever use anything else, until something even better comes along, and/or discord fucks up like skype did.

Easy for you to say just don't participate, but now resources for games are moved to Discord. There are certain games where regular forums or wiki don't have the resources. You need to join discord. People in online games like Destiny exclusively use discord to communicate, whereas in the past these same people would have been perfectly fine with using the ingame text chat. I've recently discovered just how good Windows Party Chat is. Quality is great and no latency issues like in Discord, has an overlay that works great with the Xbone controller and overall easy to use.
Steam doesn't play nice with a controller if you don't want to use Big Box mode, and I don't know if Discord has any overlay but I'd rather not use it anyway.
