It does and it's also deeply frustrating to go back and play because of the improvements to the UI. Nintendo pisses me off because it takes them like four games in a row to barely increment the flow of a game to where it should have been at the start. And then they STILL put up fucking roadblocks everywhere.

I feel like it's aged well, and is it's own sort of experience - New Horizons is fun for a whole bunch of other reasons.

Because they're just greedy and take their time so they can milk every dollar out of everything. They never sell their games for more than half off either.

In the "first" game you basically start from nothing and build your house and town up over time. I haven't thoroughly played the ones that came after the gamecube game, but it looks like in them you already start with your house being fairly large (in the first game you don't even get a second story until the last house upgrade) and it becomes more about managing your town instead of just collecting shit for your house. So I'd agree with you in saying that the vibe is different, but saying the other games in the series are soulless like a lot of the people in this thread are doing isn't necessarily correct just because they're different from the first game.

Closed off from the rest of the world. When you're young you have friends, you might visit towns at a birthday party or playdate or something but as an adult you're entirely isolated. It adjusts well to adulthood because it becomes much more difficult when grown to break your routines and spirit off somewhere, you become more excited for those nights where you find someone washed up on the beach or the raffle at Nook's. In the new game you can just go. You can leave and fiddle somewhere else. The sense of cozy isolation is hindered somewhat.

It's because it's the first one, each of these games except New horizons were unofficial sequels. They treated the player like they're new to the town but like you played before.

As someone that’s played every game in the series (with the exception of Happy Home Designer, which I hope they port to the Switch) it honestly hasn't changed in the way you assume it has. The extremely slow roll out of features that are nearly all absent from the very outset of the game is still very much in full force. You still start with a small domicile in every game, and in New Horizons you start with what is probably the smallest in the series.

Really the most distinct design iteration is that essentially all that you were only able to do to your house now applies to more and more of the area outside your house, to the point where you can actually reshape land masses and bodies of water now. Make of this what you will, however, I feel that these features serve to “game-ify” a video game that was so uniquely anti-game. Ian Bogost really understands what this series has been about, so I recommend any user look up his writings on it, but essentially the series is rooted in an adaptation of an extremely Japanese concept known as one’s “furusato” or hometown. The core idea being that this is the place you go to escape the hustle of city life and reconnect to the pastoral life of a bygone era. Newer versions of this game, consciously or not, reflect the seeping in of industrial or suburban life to those pastoral Japanese communities and consequently reflect less of a peaceful escape and yet another environment waiting to be “optimized”.

NH and NL just feel so sterile compared to the original.

You were just some random homeless jabroni moving in then, but in NL and NH you're kinda the head honcho of the village. The town prospers thanks to you, it was built by you, it's governed by you, you're the one who placed and furnished their homes, etc.

I love each and every Animal Crossing game but the improvements to the featureset in each iteration makes it impossible for me to go back to the old ones except to check out my old towns for nostalgia purposes.

I think this had the best soundtrack out of the games I've played in the series: this, NL, and NH. It's got just the right amount of percussion going on as well some nice keyboards. I can't remember the music in New Leaf, but I can say that New Horizon has a nice soundtrack that only has a few really good songs that stand out to me. Unfortunately, none of the songs can stand next to youtu.be/J36o0MZ7EzU

Yeah, it seems like the newer games try and go for a more relaxing and natural feeling, which makes it stand out far less in comparison to the unique and somewhat odd tracks of the original. I mean, just compare these two:

Nah, Aya Kyogoku is based and smart enough to realize that targeting only the autistic Gamecube diehards for eternity would doom this series. Her direction not only produced an excellent game (just not as quirky as the original), her game just blew up first month sales records like a champ. The minor differences in game design being absent is a worthwhile trade for this series being financially lucrative enough for Nintendo to keep producing them for a long, long time

the first game fucking sucks and it's near unplayable because of all the QoL stuff missing. There's also nothing to do.
