The graphics need to suit the game and story being told. Just going hyper realism isn't going to work unless it's meant to portray realistic feelings. If the graphics aren't compatible with the game, the game will never work. See Persona 5, Nocturne, or S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
>The game has to respect the player
Handholding is insulting to anyone with half a brain. Trust the player to figure things out both with the gameplay and with the story and trust their ability enough to not feel bad about testing them. See DMC3

Much like graphics, the music carries the game too. Appealing to all the senses is a sensible design choice, but even a god tier OST can make a game be remembered for that alone. See Max Anarchy.

On an addendum, not always taking yourself 100% seriously will help capture the Yas Forums audience too, but that's only specific to Yas Forums and not good game design in general
