Why is Halo not popular anymore?

Was thinking about this in the last thread. My thoughts, as a guy who doesn't have many hours on this game at all: while my main point I'll write in a minute, one big issue is the wane of the Xbox and the rise of the PS4. AFAIK was always Xbox's flagship title, and Xbox was Halo's flagship system. The two declining in sync seems to make sense.

All that said, Halo stopped being important when COD4 was released in 2007. The most surface level issue people see when they see this competition is the clash between sci fi and milsim, with milsim catching more attention and winning the sales war. However, they also have significantly different gunplay. COD features what's basically a laser pointer where you trace enemies and instakill them, while Halo has a wide plethora of largely ineffective weapons, the best of which are slow firing semi auto guns that take a long time to reload between shots and require precise headshots for every shot. Additionally COD with its sprinting gives players more freedom to roam the map. Playing Halo today, it's one of the slowest shooters ever made - you feel like you're an Astronaut bouncing slowly around the moon. So console players learned how to aim precisely and work as teams. COD provided a game where those skills were maximized. Any game with a gun like Halo's Assault Rifle is no longer interesting in an age where both console and PC gamers are interested in killing opponents quickly from all ranges of the map.

After 2007, the Halo team seemed to have done what any other gaming corporation would do and cut their losses. They realized that their heyday was over, but wanted to continue providing their product to their remaining core audience. So, Halo never really changed. It released occasional new games that kept the same core formula because that's what the Halo fanbase wanted. In other words, Halo failed to adapt to what modern gamers want, and as a result is now no longer a major title.

Sequel fatigue, no new news in awhile, even then still pretty popular.

I'd say its still popular but there really isn't much to celebrate or discuss anymore since 343i went out of their way to abandon it's identity and pander to different playerbases. If Infinite ends up miraculous not end up being a piece of shit who knows maybe the series could have a big resurgence. Now's the time to do so with Xbox getting its groove back

>Halo 5

If it makes you feel better, CoD is going through its own decline too.

4 killed it

it was but then the modern warfare reboot happened, turns out people like when a series try to remind them why they liked them in the first place instead of doing random ass space shit instead

the normieshooters of old just can't keep up with battleroyales and mobile gacha shit

It was unique at the time it came out, then too many similar games started to pop and it couldn't keep up, bringing fresh ideas etc

It's still pretty good when you look back. You can probably say the same about Metroid Prime, I truly doubt 4 will make a big fuss, Metroid Prime 3 was forgettable at best.
