Will there ever be another game that even comes close to being as good?
Will there ever be another game that even comes close to being as good?
Earthbound is better
No if we see another Earthbound/Mother game in the future or if it's at least inspired by it it'll be called Indie hipster SJW trash. It will never work.
fucking wrong, cringe, yikes, and fail
>Will there ever be another game that even comes close to being as good?
Pic related.
Never.
Wrong
Wrong, also fuck you
Exactly right
this. i can replay earthbound over and over but i just find 3 to be a slog. i don't give a fuck about all the story. there's to much fucking dialogue that dilutes all of the other uniqueness to the game.
I liked Undertale but c'mon man.
I'd say that Mother 3 is an incredible experience but Earthbound is a better game.
No unfortunately.

Earthbound's visual storytelling is unmatched. It knows how to convey its surreal ideas and themes without the need of excessive over-explaining like M3. It's one of the best examples of "show, don't tell" in vidya.
*blocks your path*
Should I give it a playhtogh?
Absolutely. It has yet to be bested as my favorite game, despite me playing it 4 years ago.
So how long and depressing is it ?
I probably would've loved M3 if I played it with the weebs a decade ago.
But as it is, I'm exhausted with stories that starts by inflicting dire tragedy on its characters. Do something else.
al see Kumatora jn all her hotness
Having Dad be a phone = dry, understated, hilarious.
Killing Mom in the first act = hamfisted, sappy, boring.
Based.
Earthbound is good, but it sucks the Beatles' dick a little too much.
Mother 3 on the other hand actually made me cry. It's such a depressing, bittersweet game.
>Earthbound is good, but it sucks the Beatles' dick a little too much.
The references weren't even that intrusive lol
I fucking love the Deirdre sample, that song is upbeat to the point of cheesiness but they made it into the creepiest, most unnerving shit ever
Undertale is better because it doesn't overstay its welcome like Mother 3.
This is what happens when someone who doesn't make video games, makes video games.
8 hours, more if you're bad. don't save scum, it'll ruin the experience. and for difficulty its not unbeatable hard. you can play on pain mode if you want a miserable experience
So were do earthbound remakes/clones go from here?
i feel like undertale while good some how drained alot from the collective consciousness from the people who enjoy these games
all the earthbound games have the problem of trying to be undertale
what can the devs do?
The problem is that Mother 3 basically ends with an argument against all these "Earthbound-likes" when you go down that memory canal.
Actually I meant more in the "how depressed are you after completing the game"way, but thanks anyway man
Wanna know why Earthbound was special? It has soul
Itoi's character writing is masterful, NPCs are really charming and in Mother 3 not only do the main characters feel deep and three-dimensional, but even some of the NPCs are fleshed out really well.
Itoi himself also has a very developed worldview, he travels, has a family, and hopped between several artforms such as literature, acting, and video games.
It gets a lot right that you normally don't get out of Nintendo games, and since its visuals are [intentionally] simplistic and its gameplay is easily replicated, it attracts hack frauds like moths to a flame.
A successful earthbound clone probably wouldn't look anything like it, because looking like a Mother game and not having similar themes would be missing the point.
These games are meant to feel like they're being seen from the eyes of a child, optimistic but still containing dark elements between the cracks. The problem many Mother clones face is that they see this as "it's pretty lighthearted on the surface but on the inside it's real dark and sinister", so they make the story needlessly edgy at various points while completely missing how Itoi handled those feelings in Earthbound and how dark elements contribute to the overall feel of the game.
If you really want to make another game that captures what it feels like to be a kid again, stop trying to mirror Itoi's idea of that and look back on your own childhood and what defined it. How did it FEEL to go through what you did. You can replicate those kinds of feelings without replicating the events, and I think that would capture the spirit of Mother better than any quirky 16-bit RPG Maker schlock with a superficially similar art-style.
Itoi didn't grow up playing video games that inspired Earthbound, he lived a complex life and used that to fuel his creativity. See the world, live a little, then maybe people will buy your crappy little indie RPG with cute characters.
I haven't seen a cookie-cutter Earthbound-inspired game since like 2018. They've probably died off.
this is Mother, except it isn't dragged down by being on a Nintendo console
