Mediocre Series with One Standout Title

Take KH for example
>Mediocre games were present before and after KHII
>KHII just so happens to be one of the best games of all time

What other series did this?

Pikmin 2

I haven't played them, but I heard that 3 was good, is that not the case?

kh2 is the best by far but all mainline games are good

The first one was extremely clunky.

KH1 has better level design and enemy groups than 2.

The platforming and gummi ship are the clunky parts of the game. Combat isnt as complex as 2, but is tight

I agree, when I said mediocre titles were present before II I was more referring to Chain Of Memories. Basically, my ranking goes like this:

Awful:
358/2
Re:Coded
Chain Of Memories

Okay:
Birth By Sleep
0.2
Dream Drop Distance

Good:
KHI
KHIII

Masterpiece:
KHII

>Combat isnt as complex as 2,
Ah yes mashing x to auto jump to enemies, mashing x to auto launch and then mashing x to attack while airborne, occasionally hitting triangle
Much more complex than kh1

Not a fan of the KH2 is a good game retcon pushed by people who are actually talking about a specific difficulty mode that was Japan-only for the better part of a decade and like it somehow overrides everything else bad about the game beyond it be a mindless button masher with shitty level design and bad story.

KH2 is one of the best ARPGs (in terms of combat gameplay only)
its cringey idiotic nomura writing, bland segments and average level design make it quite an average game.
it's not trash like ever KH after but it's still far from one of the best games of all time.

I love KH2 but even as a kid I felt like the game was just mash x to win

I can respect that. The two things I mentioned are more important to me than mechanics, so I feel 2 is kind of lacking in comparison to I.

3 is okay, but is pretty nediocre. 2 is such a stand out good game, its like a fluke or something

The people who push that are legit autists who obsess over frame data. The combat system is the only part that matters to them. They spend so long speed running and replaying DataOrg/Lingering Will that they forget how boring the normal game is for long stretches.

I'd kill for a fan mod that's nothing but the good content.

Ew
Weirdo doesnt play critical

>same shit but now you have to stop and grind between worlds
Woah...!

Except you get more AP and a MP Haste ability to make combat more fun and diverse

I play every KH game at the highest difficulty and just assumed they threw all these AP boosts at you even in the lower difficulties.

Haha yeah, that's why I think I had an arguably harder time on Proud on KHII than Critical

What a dumb meme. 2 is the advent of the Nomura plot stupidity, it has by far the worst level design in the series and the combat is braindead easy. It's the most button mashy game with quick time events that act as I win button. To top it off the game feels unfinished with stuff like Roxas boss fight being a cutscene and the using the same shitty levels twice.

KH2 being the best is a Zoomer meme for people who played it first when Final Mix came out years later to fix this shit, on release it was shit on rightfully

Well I think most people play in on the 2.5 HD ReMix nowadays, so I think that's the version that should be discussed.

Land of the Dragons and Port Royale drag the game down so hard, I almost dropped it. It's a fun game, no doubt. But holy fuck, every KH game has had a world or two that drags fun and enjoyment to an absolute halt.

>KH: Wonderland, Deep Jungle
>KH2: Atlantica (Mostly optional), Beast's Castle
>KH-BBS: Dwarf Forest, Deep Space
>KH-DDD: "The Grid" (Come the fuck on, it was just a hackeneyed remake of Space Paranoids with The Dude), Musketeers World.

Can't speak for KH3 as I refuse to buy it till it goes on sale with the DLC. But it's almost always expected that a KH game is gonna have a boring world or two. I've watched people just peace out after Deep Jungle and Wonderland, and never go back to the series.

Not that user or the one I'm about to quote, but I think
kinda hit it for me. Critical KH2 is an excellent combat system trapped in a mediocre to bad game.

Technically, the START of the Nomura plot stupidity was Chain of Memories. Oddly enough, Nomura isn't listed as a writer on that, but a director. Gee. It's almost like he has a habit of manipulating the writers of games he directs into making asinine story choices.

Realistically, the start of the Nomura fuckery was the end of KH1, when the cryptic... "KINGDOM HEARTS IS LIGHT!!!"

Motherfucker, why couldn't it just be a place? Why's it gotta be some abstract shit.

it was good for the time, also you're forgetting its basically the first ACTUAL 3D action-rpg hyprid, of course its going to be a little clunky. Lots of people actually prefer 1 for its more grounded, JRPG style gameplay rather than the action oriented 2. In fact 2 is so inconsistent in its battle system that its genuinely difficult for newcomers to get used to the game's uniqueness.

lol kingdom hearts is shit maybe play something good like the final fantasy 7 remake faggot

Chain of Memories had a decent story, better than the rest of the KH games

CoM introduced Organisation 13. That alone makes it damnable.

>Motherfucker, why couldn't it just be a place?
Are you kidding? Ansem SoD probably thought Kingdom Hearts was a place where darkness comes from but really it was a place filled with light. But I guess light & darkness being literal physical states of matter is pretty abstract of a concept. But "positive/negative energy" doesn't roll off the tongue as well.

>Can't speak for KH3
Frozen world, tangled world. I was never a big fan of the disney worlds to begin with but holy shit fuck the Frozen world.

Organization 13 is cool, it became retarded over time. The designs and concepts were good. Their disney-like animations in 3 are stellar with the robes on.

This. KHII is still a good game but this idea that it's something special is ridiculous, and I say this as someone who grew up playing it. Worlds are all boring wide-open corridors, the disney levels have no relevance to the plot making them filler, the gummi ship is less fun than 1's, and there's a huge amount of backtracking. The combat is very good, yeah, but KH1 also had great combat and people always overlook this, though it doesn't reach as high as 2's. I'm glad people ITT are pointing out that this stance on 2 is a new thing, because I've seen it a lot lately but I know it was never like this before.
A lot of the worlds are duds honestly, ironically it's the OC worlds that tend to be the best.
You could interpret that as a metaphor. The blinding light that comes out of the door might as well represent some kind of place, and so KH is the embodiment of good in that way
2 should have been the last time they appeared in the series, they were cool until you realized that there is no "dying" for them, so they essentially retconned the emotional moments of CoM and 2 just for fanservice in later games

Regardless, it could have just been a realm where-in the inhabitants were full of joy and "light", instead of being "PLACE FILLED WITH MAGICALLY HAPPY GOOD-GOOD FEELS."

When you name something "Kingdom *insert name here*", you'd expect there to be locations and inhabitants. Not a bigass void of light.

Frozen World was just an excuse to shoehorn in Disney's most profitable franchise/song.

Organization 13 was never cool. Period. It was the moment KH went from "Wholesome Disney/FF game with some weird plot points" to "Full-on Nomura Anime Advent Children bullshit".

>When you name something "Kingdom *insert name here*", you'd expect there to be locations and inhabitants. Not a bigass void of light.
There probably is an actual place just like how there's a world of darkness, but Nomura's too much of a hack to actually show it.
