Its literally filler that has you globetrotting to all these old locations, which has no place in the main scenario because there is plenty of filler already in the side content. Whether you actually get the materia or not makes no difference to the story, and the actual justification for stealing them makes no sense in the first place. They say its bad to destroy materia because they are memories of the lifestream. Ok well guess what happens to the lifestream if meteor hits? Shinra is perfectly justified in sacrificing some materia to try and stop it

so we will wait ten years for playing thirty hours of kalm and junon, please square take my money!

they literally say they would need it to defeat sephiroth
if shinra wouldve destroyed meteor sephiroth wouldve summon another one, the plan doesn't even work as you can see in the cutscenes.

The huge materia doesnt do shit to stop meteor. The lifestream does. Materia isnt part of the lifestream. Stealing the huge materia and giving them to bugenhagen doesnt do shit to help anyone in the story. They unlock shit for the player, but narratively it makes no sense. It is straight up padding, and should have been a sidequest instead of part of the main scenario

You can imagine my dissapoinment when I found out it was Chakra. Probably the same dissapointment your parents felt when you were born.

Either do something entirely new, or follow the original story completely. Not this half-assed shit where you retread the original for nostalgia but then throw in one epic subversion at an iconic moment to try and be clever and controversial

Literally the entire point of the huge materia is the same as the reactors, to stop shinra from abusing shit. How would they balance it otherwise, making them key items? Making enemies have shields that require the materia to destroy which would be a shit and tedious idea? Or like Firaga + Magnify where you get the materia and the game combat becomes as braindead as gen 1 pokemon?

If anything you made better points for them removing that shit from the story altogether which would make more sense.
