In VRChat, you can use whatever character model you want, but almost everyone uses an anime model. I've heard from more experienced players that if you play without an anime model, you get ignored more often or people will approach you less. It would not matter if your character was realistic or stylized. People who don't even watch anime much would use anime models just to fit in.
Did anime models win majority because it's aesthetically superior or because the player base that found it first were anime fans?
If a game like Ready Player One existed, would the same result happen? If all MMOs allowed for custom player characters, what art style would win?

I can't say. I do think part of it is that anime is more popular than ever so all the teens are drawn to it. Anime is also a very varied style, it can be either serious, funny, cute, or sexy Westerners approach to design would be to focus on one of these things when designing a set of characters.
If anime is aesthetically more pleasing, it's not a change we will see in western art styles for a while, as most art directors are boomers making people do what they thought was cool in the 90s.

For people who don't do any 3D modeling (most people), MMD models are the easiest to acquire and setup. Besides that, the models still look good after lowering polys. VRchat is horribly unoptimized, and it's both the fault of the devs and some of the ridiculous bullshit some people upload. But yeah, a lot of people I've met on VRchat tend to be weeb faggots too.
VRChat is a game of socially inept losers, the same type of people who watch anime more often than games. The game was also plagued by TDA MMD models quickly due to how easy they are to obtain, and the growing Japanese community who sell $50 anime reskins (see OP Picture) are tricking gullible retards into getting shitty, badly rigged models.
