That thing does twice as much damage as the master sword. Pair that with a jump attack and you're melting enemies. IIRC you can also jump attack into crouching stabs and your crouching stabs all do as much damage as your jump attacks.

To be fair, you don't need to collect every heart piece to make Ocarina and subsequent Zeldas easy as shit. They all have their rough patches on a three heart run but they're still pretty easy.

You can get the eye very early with no requirements I'm not sure about the long shot being needed for haunted wasteland it's been a while but I think it's doable without it
