I've tried higher resolutions, I just flat out do not see a difference from a comfortable viewing distance. And what little difference I do see is just not worth the exponential power and price necessary.
I got a 2060ko this past week. It's going to let me play virtually anything at max settings for the next five years at least. I can't say the same for even the most powerful cards at 4k

1080 with 60 frames should be the absolute minimum

2000s I typically play at 1024x768
2010s is 1080p
