The thing is is that the interconnecting story is far too stupid and goofy to be taken seriously. This was a big problem in the endings of these games. DR1 takes itself semi seriously but then the ending has a underaged supermodel and her twin system the greatest soldier of the planet take over and destroy the world for no reason and with no explanation as to how they did it. It's not a world that's well thought out enough to something a person could get invested in.

I don't think it really matters, the outside world is just an excuse to explain how the killing games are possible. You don't need to get invested in it because we don't ever see it, at least in the mainline games. In DR1 by the time you find out about the apocalypse the game is practically over, it's just there to be the last piece of conflict before you win.

True. But by the time you're at the end you're already invested in the game. So to have such a stupid not thought out reason for the game to take place is disappointing and lessens the impact of the game overall. I'm not saying it needs to be completely thought out, but it should have been either simple enough or explained enough for it to not undermine the rest of the story

I get that Danganronpa is a visual novel game, but it seems like 90% of the times it's just talking to other people and then, even when you get to the trials, an NPC basically walks you through what to do or what to think. The story is somewhat interesting, but certain things make it completely fucking retarded (at least in Trigger Happy Havoc). Are the newer games any faster paced and does the story ever get fleshed out in a way that makes the premise somewhat believable?

the story never gets better (and arguably gets worse depending on who you ask, it's controversial so you'll have to make up your own mind), but the trials do improve a lot in the second and third games. second game's helper is a little less overbearing than kyoko, and the third game doesn't have anyone walking you through it which is nice
third game also has fun postgame content with all the characters from the previous games

The first one is probably my least favorite Danganronpa game in terms of gameplay, cuz in Danganronpa 2 there are a lot more interesting mechanics (Bone On The Meat tho), but the story is so whatever that I couldn't care more, as well as the majority of the characters are not so good. But V3 for me is the best of all, gameplay wise, character wise and story wise. The Ultra Despair Girls game is so different from the others three that I cannot even compare.
Btw, three notes: the soundtrack is good at all games, and Ouma, Kirigiri and Amami are the best characters in the series, and both Future and Despair Arc animes are good.
