Beyond that the difficulty in NES and SNES games usually comes from that you often have to go through lots of easier content before you can try the hard part, so your skill only grows a fraction of the playtime.
Roguelites often suffer from the same problem; many hard bosses could be mastered in 20 minutes, but each fight takes 2 minutes and you need 30 minutes to reach it, so it takes 10 hours.
