Frenzy from Bloodborne. It's basically the same as the insanity mechanic from the CoC table top games that has been repurposed by many games. OP was likely making a bait thread because frenzy frustrates many players because they are shit.

Except it's not looking at them, they have to see YOU. It's magic they are using to fuck with your head. You can look at them if you are invisible for example from a Blue Elixir for example. Why is it so unreasonable to you guys for an eldritch horror to know insanity magic?

What insanity? There's no insanity, it just takes most of your HP away in a single frame. It looks dumb as fuck to me.

It's not distorted, that's just what the Doll actually is.

It's supposed to be your brain like exploding or hemorrhaging. Again, you can think that magic that does that is stupid but it is very clearly NOT just looking at them that makes you frenzy. That was the point of my post and you seem to have willfully ignored it. I was pointing out that not only do you have to be looking at them but they need to be aware of you and when they are they start to glow, they are actively doing something to make you frenzy, it's like any other magic in the game. Whether or not you think the amount of HP it takes is dumb isn't relevant to anything I said nor is how dumb it "looks". I was pointing out that people comparing them to other games where you actually go insane just from looking at squids are wrong, it's clearly not the same as say that shitty mechanic in the recent Call of Cthulhu game.

Gehrman made the Doll in the Waking World's workshop, a doll having Maria's likeness, so as to cope with her loss (she was a daughter figure to Gehrman). But when Gehrman was around Laurence's attempts to beckon the Moon Presence, something went awry and Gehrman was trapped into the Hunter's Dream, which was conceived by the Moon Presence. It was a distorted version of the waking world's Workshop, and in it the Doll was brought to life.

Also Gehrman is deeply disturbed by the Doll, which is why she never sees him. Poor thing.

The Winter Lanterns themselves must be distortions of the Doll. The Doll itself isn't a Winter Lantern.

my head canon is that winter lanterns just take on a superficial appearance of the doll in an attempt to get the Hunter's guard down, either to trick the hunter unsuccessfully or out of a legitimate warped sense of love. and the messengers that make the head are actual dead messengers
