Why are modern games so hated?

> Best games of all time list
> All 90s or 00s Japanese games except Portal 2, Nier & botw

Because modern games focus more on making the most money or having the best graphics, anything other than actually being a fun game

suits

Most of them treat you like you're stupid. I was watching someone I know play Half life 2 for the first time the other day and watching them use the fucking level design to figure things out was absolutely refreshing.

eh it's pretty normal. most best movies of all time are from the 50's and 60's best books are from the 1800's, as a medium goes on the standards for "greatness" go way up

because they will never make Suikoden 2 again

This is why

Doesn't work if independent people who are far older or younger than you corroborate these beliefs

modern games are rarely made with passion and usually only follow a bare bones formula to make the most money.

agenda over story.

no this is why

I never understood this, my top 3 favorite games came out when i was 8, 16, and 22. Where's this "when you were 12" bullshit come from?

Theres alot of reasons. First games from that time tended to be more "revolutionary". Next nostalgia. The people writing these lists are in their late 20s early 30s. They also tend to be safe bets. Your gonna be hard pressed to find someone who hates games like SMB3. Theres also legacy and prestige to these games. These lists need to apply to a large amount of people so putting a game like factorio high up would be a bad idea since that only appeals to certain people.

Nier is a Japanese game.

This.

Because back then a truly great game was the exception.
Nowadays the market is so big and there is so much amazing stuff coming out that you can't single out the "best" anymore. It's become so diverse and subjective to the persons individual interest.
In the 90s you had a dozen noteworthy games a year, nowadays it's countless.
And it's just easier to look at something you're already fond of because you have those long lasting memories and say that is the best than the thing you're currently invested in. People love to pick favourites, they do so during childhood and in their teens, in the early 20s it kinda manifests but after that it doesn't change. Nobody who played RE2 back then is gonna admit that the Remake is better. Just look at how much cognitive dissonance it causes when people talk about it, all the pety complaints that apply to the Remake but the original is just perfect and can't be wrong.

Greedy suits and politics

Contrarianism is at all-time high along with sentimental feelings towards anti-capitalist systems. People are poor and angry about it.

Such bullshit. Not only is gaming as a hobby cheaper than ever, it's also the least regulated nowadays.
It's ridiculous how common and severe censorship used to be.

The problem is that you're growing up in the post golden age user. So companies figured out what makes money enough so that they don't have to make good games or experiment anymore whatsoever. Compare capcom of the 90's to capcom of today, or just look at ubisoft or EA.

Because the people making the lists were growing up during that time

Because they were games made by passionate young people without trying to pander to everyone on the planet
They were free to try new stuff and innovate
For example look at FF7 Remake, it's made by the exact same people, over 20 years later, no wonder these people don't have the same innovative ideas and energy
Wrong, many people would put contemporary games as the GOAT in the 90s and early 00s, but people put 90s and 00s games as the GOAT now
Because that ended up being the golden era
When people think of the best FF game they'll never say a game outside of that time frame
Same goes for Halo, RE, and MGS
It's why there are so many remasters, reamkes, and ports coming out recently
1998 had MGS, Half Life, Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Red and Blue (in the west), RE2, Tekken 3, Baldur's Gate and many more
All games that were enormously influential, fantastically well received, and still considered the best ever today
This does not happen anymore

because modern games follow the same trends over and over and it becomes harder to discern a really unique, fun experience when every game has shitty stealth, crafting, and an open world

If devs spent their time on new ips instead of remasters then we would have more good games now.

>Compare capcom of the 90's to capcom of today
so RE2 vs REmake 2.

Nice zoomer argument

That wasn't an argument, it was an observation that actually stems back to 2000's Yas Forums which was filled with bitching about the dollar-per-hour value of games even back then.

I was actually thinking about this yesterday. A truly amazing AAA game will never be made; the people who want to create a labour of love don't have the budget or team to bring it entirely up to snuff, and big studios won't make a labour of love because there's things that they can make which are more monetizable.
Also this, when we were younger we had less capability to be critical of what we consumed. Ben 10: Defender of Earth is a pretty good game for a kid, but I'm too old for that shit now.

Everything was bad when I was 12.
The shit got good when I was 18.

I watched The Last Airbender for the first time when I was 27 and it was pretty fucking good.

As a guy who regularly emulates and plays old games, I still love old games much more than modern ones, even if I play them for the first time

>The shit got good when I was 18.
Was that last year? Because if you were 12 in like 2014, I can understand why you'd think that. Around 2009-2014 was probably the worst time for video games all around.

It was 2008

People like simplistic pseudo-reasoning that makes other people look like acting on purely subconscious derogatory motives that the enlightened one reveals in his witty commentary.

It's exactly the same as music. "Why is modern music bad, I was born in the wrong generation." The truth is, there were plenty of bad songs back in the 70s and 80s, just as there were plenty of bad games in the 90s and the 00s. Only the best games from the 90s and 00s are widely remembered, so of course they're on the list all of the time. There are plenty of games from the 2010s and 2020s that will be remembered too, don't worry.

> Where's this "when you were 12" bullshit come from?
The cognitive dissonance you need to not off yourself in a world that gets worse every day. Objectively media in general took a huge nosedive and everyone thinks new shit is great today. It's not even zoomers at this point, but people in general who consume shit with an ever-growing passion the worse it gets while half of the rebels already because they can't bullshit temselvbes with cognitive dissonance anymore. Aka your reddit dumpster fires in the past few years.

That's a very good point. I suppose it could just be that the design process and decision making for video games just got worse.

Because back then video games were still for the most part a new thing so that's when there was a lot of innovation in the medium. At this point devs and publishers know what's popular and what works so there's no point to innovate, a template has already been made. These days we get really solid games but they generally follow this tried formula, so while people may enjoy these new games they don't have the same impact.

Why do incels think that girls can't enjoy things without the attention of other men? People make shit like this and wonder why they're permavirgins.

soulless cash-grabs
lack of real difficulty/challenge
streamlined/removed/lack of features
good gameplay being traded for self-indulgent story
flash over substance in general
pre-order dlc
on-disc dlc
microtransactions
an incestuous industry that deflects criticism by saying its audience is entitled bigots
hard agenda-pushing

there are still good games coming out though, and you can pirate games fairly easily if you want to get around the kikery

this, also fuck people who cry nostalgia when an old game is liked
