I've been thinking about this for a while, but why did the original localization team think Craudo = Cloud and not Claude? Tifa is and Barret are supposedly named after some shit in the sefirot, and Aeris was retconned as Aerith in KH, right? Meaning the romanji was Aerisu. But why keep Craudo as Cloud? Why would they intentionally correct one name while leaving another name as incorrect?
>inb4 becuz Cloud is le protagonist
So what? I'm willing to bet good fucking one that if anyone knows what FFVII is, they associate the game with Cloud, Tifa and Aerith. Not to mention, protagonists are rarely the most beloved characters in games, people usually like the supporting cast more, and yes, I'm sure that millions of more people liked Aerith more than Cloud.
FFVII names and shit

Aerith = E a ri su = Alice
You're a retarded mouthbreather because Alice is ALWAYS written as アリス. No exceptions.
There's no singular correct way since they weren't really meant to cross the language barrier
At best we just hackney a solution out of what's available to us.
>Craudo
retard
also because クラウド is Cloud. Claude is クロード
weeb
>The names "Cloud" and "Strife" are English words referring to weather and difficulty respectively. Tetsuya Nomura has stated Cloud's name contrasts with Zack Fair's and the idea of "fair weather", in that Zack led a peaceful and happy life while Cloud's has been full of turmoil.
cloud's name isn't a mistranslation, it's deliberate:

"aeris," on the other hand, was a mistranslation, which is why it's been fixed since the original.
I don't speak Ching-Chong, so contextualize your bullshit in a manner that makes sense to non-subhumans.
But "Cloud" is not a name. "Claude" is. You have a touchy situation with Aeris/th, and if they meant something else, if the spelling was Eris, etc.
because "Claude" is french and gay
Aeris was a minstranslation. Her real name always was Aerith, which means something like "I Earth"
>be a soldier
>kill people for money
>get experimneted on and gunned down by a pack of soldiers
>peaceful and happy
what the fuck is wrong with nips?
>contextualize your bullshit in a manner that makes sense to non-subhumans.
the jap devs deliberately used the ching-chong way to pronounce the english word "Cloud" and not the nip-nong way to pronounce "Claude"
"Aeris" was never retconned as anything, in the original code the english translation was always Aerith from the very beginning, you can see this by doing speedrun strats that ff7 runners use where they skip the naming events on new games, where you pick a name for the first time you encounter a main party member. If you skip the event somehow, the game is programmed to set the character to base stats at level one with their placeholder name when they finally do join your party. Aerith has always been the placeholder name in the original code.
zack was a chad and pretty much the only normal member of his friend group. compared to cloud, sephiroth, genesis and angeal, he lived a stress-free life.
Because the localization is bad as usual but it was always suppose to be Cloud and not Claude
Cool shit. Got any proof?
Okay.
But Cloud overcomes his Strife through plot convenience. He didn't really have a shitty life, he just was unable to live up to his childhood dreams and came to embody a very mediocre existence. His friends, which I guess he did earn, help him overcome his mental breakdown, but he is endowed with a deus ex machina in the form of mako experimentation which basically made him superhuman, and he couldn't have given Sephiroth his comeuppance for his parents, Tifa's parents, Nibelheim, Aerith, and Zack had he remained the powerless whelp he was at the start. Like yes, I get it, he went through some shit after joining Shinra, but so what? It doesn't feel cathartic to kick someone's ass if the power you have was basically not of your own doing.
Unlike Tifa, who is just a girl that learned martial arts and became unimaginably strong through sheer willpower.
Never played any expanded universe shit, why was Zack a chad? I know that he's meant to be seen as one by Cloud, but what'd he do? Why was his life, "Fair?"
>asks a questiom
>gets an answer
>chimps out over it
Why are americans like this
It mean "I have a lisp and that's my name sounds retarded, but it's actually Aeris"
See He basically spelled Cloud and Claude out in JP, and the name that is used is the JP version of Cloud.
Honestly it makes me wonder more why they didn't localize Zack as Zaks/Zacks given that its ザックス
Strife and Fair don't mean shit in their names mate. You're looking too deep.
Also Zack is a cool guy. Hes a nice and likable dude, who dies saving a friend.
because Zacks sounds as retarded as Aerith, but at least they had the common sense not to "fix" it in later games
You're asking why characters by Tetsuya "eternally 13 years old" Nomura named a character Cloud? The man who wrote a story about a boy whose name directly translates to "sky" going on a Disney adventure and getting caught up in a war between light and darkness?
>why they didn't localize Zack as Zaks/Zacks given that its ザックス
it was the 90s. they emailed some dude a .txt file with all the dialog out of context and said "finish in a week"
>Never played any expanded universe shit, why was Zack a chad?
have you played ff9? zack has a lot of charisma like zidane.
Everything in this post is supremely wrong and retarded. You should be ashamed.
>I am a retard, please spoonfeed me like the 5 year old I mentally am
Kill yourself.
Localization isn't the Wild West it was back in the 80s. People actually communicate with the original creators now, and nobody with any sense trusts a direct romaji translation. I mean, just look at your "Craudo" interpretation tells you how awful the practice is.
>I don't speak Ching-Chong
Okay, this kind of talk really pisses me off. "Ching-Chong" is Chinese, not Japanese. Get your racism straight!
holy shit my english exploded let me try again

I have no idea where that guy got Craudo.
クラウド in romanji should be Kuraudo.
They put questions out rhetorically thinking they're making a clever point and don't expect that they're about to get assblasted when somebody has a response ready.
Except Sora is literally an actual name, even if its also the word for Sky.
Also the weather themed naming conventions were in more games than just Nomura games.
Squall, Lightning/Snow.
I'd say Tidus, but that shits just Japanese and pronounced Teedus.
Oh, okay. Yeah I played IX, it's my favorite FF.
Suck my cock, faggot.
Nomura didn't give the cast their names, did he? Because Tifa and Barret have pretty deep names.
>Tifa and Barret have pretty deep names.
I wouldn't say "deep" but more like... I dunno, creative seems right. Barret is just Barretta which is a firearms manufacturing company which is funny because he's a nigger. Tifa could be a million different things though.
FF and related protagonists are usually named after something in the sky. Cloud is Cloud because his identity is nebulous and indistinct. Then there's Squall, Lightning, Sora, Tidas (bases on the sun), etc.
