Dungeon Crawlers

What's a game I can play to learn how to be the Chad Explorer?

Etrian Odyssey series. It makes you draw the map yourself so your goal naturally becomes drawing and completing the entire thing, it also gives plenty of shortcuts so you spend less time retracing old steps

Etrian Odyssey is a good suggestion. It's quite punishing if you try to go further than your resources allow so patient exploration is definitely the name of the game. You can turn it into a grinding simulator but that makes it incredibly tedious. Playing like the left side of the image will mean that you likely won't need to grind until postgame superbosses (which are totally bullshit and there is nothing wrong with skipping them to move on to the next game).

Etrian Odyssey 1 is the hardest and has some pretty imbalanced classes but I think it's a great starting point. Alternatively, EOIII, and Nexus are both great standalone games as well.

That's not Untold 1

Yeah, I regret powergaming EO IV though. It helps if you think your party are pals with each other and think about their interaction. I was extremely guilty with grinding the Dragon Quest games though.

Honestly I'd love to see an RPG Dungeon Crawler with more in-depth emergent party interactions. I liked Darkest Dungeon with the Afflicted Characters snapping at each other but I'd also love to see something that's not for the detriment of the player as well.

To be honest I was going to draw the map anyway (like back when I played text adventures), so the game having facilities for that would be helpful. I assume it lets you add comments?

Yep, if you have a 3DS you can go

EOIV > EOU1 > EOU2 > EOV > EO Nexus

Since each installment has a small QOL improvement over the last.

I think EO2 with no Hexer is the hardest

Would be cool if the out-of-dungeon parts had some exploration as well, so you can wander around and your party sort of go run errands themselves, like you can find your cleric at the shrine of their deity, etc.

And what about a non japanese game that can run on pc?

Well you can emulate all the EO games anyway. I did it myself.

I don't have a 3DS, but I do have a normal DS and a flash cart, so I'll be limited on that front.

Star Ocean is the only game I've ever seen that had the party do their own thing in towns.

That's nice, but it would be better for me if the game wasn't weabooish

Legend of Grimrock I, II. this isnt turn based though.

well you can play the first three Etrian Odysseys.

Other notable dungeon crawlers on the DS I guess is... The Dark Spire but I haven't played that. But you might prefer that more since it's less animu looking.

Oh and another game I think of that gives me this feel is probably Renowned Explorers. Though it's not really a Dungeon Crawler but I make a lot of game choices based more on feel and what I think my party would do.

That's doesn't look like a traditional dungeon crawler. I'm half convinced to get a PSVita so I can emulate older dungeon crawlers on it since that's where the 3DS is handicapped rn but I also realize I can just do that on PC... but I kinda prefer playing dungeon crawlers on handheld for some reason.

Daggerfall

Is Dark Souls a weeaboo game? Etrian Odyssey is grounded in almost the same medieval fantasy as that series.

I don't mind animu, but a lot of the newer styles just aren't my jam, but that's probably just me showing my age. But The Dark Spire looks cool so I'll give that a try as well.

Dark Spire's classic mode is pure kino.

Is King's Field a dungeon crawler?

How about Ultima: Underworld?

What do you guys think about Mary Skelter 2 as an Etrian Odyssey player?

Why, because you're shallow? Let the gameplay speak for the game, not the lolitastic art style. What are you so afraid of?

>What are you so afraid of?
That's a strange way to end it. What are you implying with this question?

That you don't want a game with anime aesthetics to beat you.

I beat both Grimrocks, Vaporum, Mary Skelter, and every first person SMT game even if.. and 1 & 2.
I've tried to get into Etrian Odyssey but none of them do it for me.

What am I missing? I am admittedly not very knowledgeable about dungeon crawlers and tend to stick to series I know.

Try a Western one like Wizardry. Hard as balls, and you should read a spoiler-free FAQ (the NES version has a good one), but you might find its simplicity and honesty more compelling.

Are the newer Wizardry games any good? I've heard of the series but I've never played any of them.
NES might be too far back for me, I played the SNES versions of the older SMT games and those were still a bit dated for me. I ended up having to check guides periodically which I didn't really enjoy.

Played Renowned Explorers and first couple of runs are nice but when the first thrill ends you realize that half of the cool exciting elements of other roguelites are there replaced with mathematical operators to make more points. Example: if you play Slay the Spire and find cool objects or cards you are like wow now I'm gonna do all kinds of crazy shit. Imagine almost all of that replaced with oh shit I'm gonna have a better high score. One of the most depressing games that I've ever left

I value gameplay more than artstyle, but if I can have a good gameplay without having to plug my nose (is it also an english expression?) I'm way happier

It's not, but the big thing for me is not having to play as a big eyed cute child. I can bring myself to do it, but I have my artistic preferences

Is Grimrock good? Should I start from the first?
