BFBB

Never played this as a kid, but I'm impressed by how much hype the remake is stirring up. So I have to ask: is it really a good game, or just an average collectathon being propped up by nostalgia?

Most people would say it was at least above average in gameplay.

average run of the mill 3d platformer

It's not mindblowingly good. It's just a little better than expected. And nostalgia.

Emulate it and see for yourself, it's made for fans of the classic show

I just beat the game in 3 days worth of playing. Great first half of the game. The second half is garbage at Kelp Forest, Mermalair, and Flying Dutchman's Ship.

And the shittiest ending because it never really ends.

>The second half is garbage
Shit taste

>but I'm impressed by how much hype the remake is stirring up
The people who played this as kids are now reaching their mid to late 20s, which is the period of PEAK nostalgia.
>So I have to ask: is it really a good game
It's a pretty decent platformer, but nothing to write home about.

I have no positive association with the Spongebob aesthetic. In fact it feels uncomfortable to me.

thanks for telling us user.

It's the best licensed game period. In terms of platformers, it is definitely in the top portion of them. As a collectathon I think its definitely one of the best.

This
+ if you liked the spinybob show as a kid then you pretty much automatically will find all the writing to be endearing

>Dream Challenge world
>Easiest level to collect all golden spatulas
>Lol jumping spike blocks is hard bro.
pathetic.

pretty good.
8 out of 10
9 if you like the bob

Let me make this clear, unless you're a fan of the show, and I mean A REALLY BIG FAN OF THE SHOW, then you'll get nothing out of it. As a collectathon platformer it has some really good design elements that help it stand out from the crowd.

The mission structure is intuitive to the point where there's not any kind of obscure collectables hidden everywhere, it has Mario Odyssey like mini games that get you side collectables, there's a convenient quick warp to the main collectable so long as you've activated it, power ups that range from a bowling ball, a guided missile, picking up and throwing things, and swinging across large gaps using a lasso maneuver. The game has 3 playable characters, Spongebob, Patrick, and Sandy. It doesn't run into the DK64 issue that a lot of people have where you can only pick up character specific collectables, but there are sections of the game designed for these characters specifically so you wont be able to progress just playing as one character only.
Collectables are segregated into these fun platforming challenges, and the controls are tight enough for you to get better at it, while floaty enough so it doesn't feel like you need to over compensate for jumps or that you land too slowly.

the latter

>not appreciating the aesthetics of the dream worlds
The Kelp Forest and Dutchman's Graveyard have the challenge you're looking for

Its a decent game but with a licensed property so people remember fondly both the show and the game, like Simpsons hit and run, the SNES Power Rangers game and Spiderman 2 for PS2/GCN. It's a product of its time with double nostalgia.

I think it's a pretty good game. It's very unique, doesn't feel grindy, easy enough to chill out and play. I'll probably buy the remake if I see it on g2a once it comes out.

Haven't played it in a long ass time but I remember it being a good game. It was mindblowing or fantastic but for a licensed game it was ahead of the curve.

>you'll get nothing out of it
>lists reasons why the game is well designed

As for the negatives of the game, it really does fall flat in certain area's. The Mermalair has these tricky platforms that require you to throw objects on in order to progress, these platforms are slippery and the objects have a timer before they explode. it is required for just one collectable however. Then there's another puzzle that involves an entire chain reaction of events that no child would ever be able to do at their age. That section was nothing but frustration and if you mess up once, you have to start from the beginning. Kelp forest has a really badly designed puzzle as well. You have to stack these objects on weighted plates while going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth to change between patrick and spongebob. People have problems with the slide in that level too but I found it easy to do and fun to skip around, if you've played Sonic Adventure you'll know what I mean. The final boss of the game can suck ass if you're not quick on your toes. You have to shoot a missile into it's brain while keeping a robot shooting lasers at you at bay, it's a lot to juggle.

In terms of overall design, this game is a solid 9/10. You should definitely go check it out. Just don't buy too much into the hype, it's mostly because this is a remake of a license title that had a lot of heart poured into it and we never thought we would see something like it ever exist, especially after the garbage we've been getting.

>Fucking generic cash register.wav sfx for shiny object
For the love of fucking god please tell me they brought back the old sound for collecting the shinies

Should i wait for the remake bros or just pirate the OG? Does the version matter?

Yeah my bad, I often underestimate my ability to say dumb shit.

Shit Design = Challenge
Kelp Forest was fun only at beating MermaidMan's slide time. The rest was boring puzzle gimmicks with patrick in the darkest setting possible.
Dutchman's Graveyard was too short, very linear, wall jumping sucked compared to SM64's, and the Flying Dutchman boss was stupid easy.

And fuck Mermalair for the "physics test" ball puzzle. But it had the most challenging and fun boss in the game.

You should play the OG, just so you already know what you're in for. I don't know if the remake drastically changes anything but you should probably just play OG just in case.

And besides, the remake is like 2 months away; you can easily complete the original in that amount of time.

Alright lads i'm ready.

Beat the movie game a while back but it wasn't as good as i remembered it, too many car and slide levels. Heard BfBB fixed that though

Oh no no no

Battle for Bikini Bottom came first, and yes the Movie game is generally worse than BfBB. Movie game is padded out to hell and back and has some shitty design elements, despite introducing the upgrade system which I enjoy a lot. There weren't any kind of car missions in BfBB and the slide levels are used sparringly.

oh fuck no that's WAY too bright

Sandy's Dome in the OG wasn't that dark. I hope they add an indoor treehouse level because it could've been a great opportunity to extend the game. Boss: Feral Sandy

just an average collectathon being propped up by nostalgia, for sure. Some of those later levels are painful to have to play.

This is basically a sequel, made by the same devs and on the same engine and its much better

The movie game had some nightmarish enemies and put you in Dynasty Warriors type of horde challenges from the beginning. It felt like a fever dream.

>its much better
nice bait

>This is basically a sequel, made by the same devs and on the same engine and its much better

Nah, BFBB was like a Spongebob GTA. This took away the hubworld exploration and forced mission mode to progress. Plus, it was too short.

It's surprising how much this game asks of the player considered it's intended for a small child. Even the first time you play as Sandy asks quite a bit of the player, with enemies throwing long range missiles at you while youre swinging around

Patty Wagon is fun and the platforming challenges are actually challenging

The Movie game really had some questionable design choices
The Spongeball and Floating Block challenges were kind of fun at least

>completely linear levels
>driving missions
>slideshow cutscenes
>much less polish
No

h-hey guys, what about me?

Hype? What? Are you retarded faggots young enough that you actually watched this trash or any trash Nickelodeon content for that matter? I fucking hate zoomers.

user the people most excited for this are in their 20s

I beat Jak 2 at the age of 7 in less than a month. I don't think BFBB was that difficult looking back. Now I'm grown, maybe my skills got rusty on the replay.

>nightmarish enemies
these guys fucking suck
>shoots rocket
>splits into five small rockets
>blast radius can hurt you
>puts three of them + a couple more at the end of planktopolis
i really do like how the fish inside is one of the bfbb fish models though

I remember it being tedious and bad. Also I think this game killed my PS2 because it started to break down shortly after I played this.

Did you like Donkey Kong 64? If yes, then you will enjoy this.

SpongeBob aired in 1999. I'm 28 and I watched it as a kid.
