I went into this game expecting some massive clusterfuck due to how infamous the ending is and I really don’t see the issue. It was fine. Has shit been patched since release? Also I installed the extended cut if that makes things different.
Can someone explain the hate for Mass Effect 3’s ending(s)?

Yes
I expected the same when I played it for the first time years ago it just seems to be man-children complaining relentlessly.
I can't blame the ending entirely. Mass Effect 3 as a whole just rushed the shit out of the story and felt like some sort of Michael Bay schlock. At least the ending was somewhat in line with the recurring theme of creator vs creation.
NOOOOOOOOOOO!11 THE GAME MUST END THE WAY I WANT IT TO!1
The extended cut isn't the original ending.
The original had no real closure, the game just ended after the relays exploded.
If you weren't here in 2012 you could not possibly understand.
>Has shit been patched since release?
Yes. The ending got a extended cut which didnt really fix much when you think but gives you at least a hint at something.
It also received a Day 1 DLC with the Prothean and later another Story DLC that retroactively tried to make sense of their shoehorned ending. I dont count Omega and Citadel DLC since they were leftover assets from ME2
The original ending literally had the starchild give you no answers, the relays blew up in all endings and the last thing we saw was the normandy crashing on the planet along with the space scene with the old guy and kid talking about the shepard
Other than that there was nothing but a BUY OUR DLC SCREEN that appeared. The hatred was 100% justified
Same boat as you. Played it last year and I also didn’t see the issue.
Did some research and apparently the devs said that the ending would be based on choices made throughout the first 3 games, rather than just a generic ‘hurr durr pick an ending’ where everything gets the same ending regardless. I can understand how in 2012 that would have pissed people the fuck off, but playing the games as a trilogy in 2020 you’re probably not going to care about that.
There was also some lore issues but that’s mostly just autism.
It has been patched and DLCs were added, so its much better now. Its really not that bad, just could have been alot better.
you werent here faggot.

Ok I guess that makes sense.
The Extended Cut only expands upon the ending, it doesnt fix it. It does little for those who played the original ending.
The main reasons why it was so negatively received is that Mass Effect was always a series where the choices you made had impact, not on the overall story, but how other characters perceived you and a few other key events.
The ending made none of those choices matter, and I still cannot fathom how people are okay with it. It destroyed my enthusiasm for the whole series. I wasnt hyped for Andromeda, and we all saw how that turned out.
One thing that put me off the fanbase too was how some people started berating those who criticised the ending as 'entitled'. Every piece of work is open to criticism, and ME3 left a LOT to be criticised for. It has the best gameplay in the trilogy, and everything up until the Tuchanka arc was great. But after that, the writing took a nose dive in quality.
To summarise; a game series built upon making choices ultimately boiled down to your choices not mattering in the end.
>but that’s mostly just autism
Worse you didnt need autism to realize that the ending did not fit the series. Even if you only played ME3 you could make arguments against the Starchilds nonsense.
It was a mess and its biggest flaw was that it rendered the IP useless
Yes, it has been patched. No, it doesn’t seem as bad because it’s been a long time, so you need to consider the context. ME was the biggest goddamn thing in the genre, there was a ton of hype, a ton of marketing, and a lot of promises made by the devs. The lead guy literally said it’s not just an ending where you choose A, B, C. Bioware talked for years about how your choices mattered, it was pretty much the entire premise of the whole trilogy. You find out in the last minute that not only do your choices not matter, no choices you made up to this point really do. It was a bad twist that undermined everything the series stood for and tried to recontextualize everything you knew about Mass Effect in way that frankly made no sense.
What’s without exploring the plethora of other issues the game had. Obviously the ending gets the most focus, but the entire game has rotten elements. The high points of the game, places like Tuchanka and Rannocj, are built off of characterization, world building, and plot set up in the previous games so even the good parts of ME3 weren’t things it earned alone.
This is how the game originally ended OP

The extended dlc tries to explain the original cut but it's still total shit; the game introduces a new antagonsist in the last 10 minutes and tries giving the Reapers a ridiculous motivation that had nothing to do with the themes of the game prior to the conversation.
It also didn't have a slideshow showing your crewmates, the ending just shows the Normandy crashing on a random planet, Joker walking out if they survived and cuts to black.
Also this was the original ending message from the developers. It's still shit and always will be shit.
It's the hype built up over the years. The series was called "Mass Effect" not only because of the game-world's lore, but also because your decisions were supposed to have a "mass effect" on the story.

This didn't really happen in 1 and 2 turned out to be sidequest, so everyone was waiting to see how 3 would be able to pull off massively different endings influenced by your choices.
I will never not be mad
Retard
>we've reached the point of such contrarianism that people are unironically defending ME3's ending
ME3 had the worst kind of normie mountain dew audience so the endings went over their heads.
That image was the last thing out of the Mass Effect trilogy. That's what newfags fresh from Reddit don't realise. The last two words in the ME trilogy were Downloadable and Content. The ending was so shitty that it caused a massive QAnon tier conspiracy to try and explain as it actually being a fake ending hallucinated by an indoctrinated Shepard.
All of this ignores the often-forgotten fact that the entire script of the ending of Mass Effect 3 was leaked back in late 2010, attacked relentlessly by Yas Forums and then not fixed by Bioware despite them claiming they would do so after the fan backlash.
>It's still shit and always will be shit.
It's exhausting that it's been years and yet we still have to deal with people trying to excuse that bullshit. I'll never stop responding to this kind of thing because I simply can't accept a world where Bioware is forgiven for Mass Effect 3.
They gave the same ending reskined with three different colors, it also didn't make any sense.
Also at the end the choices you made didn't really matter.
They honestly should have gone with the IT to explain it.
If you play ME3 now with all the DLC you wont see the problem.
Prothean and Leviathan foreshadow the ending and its bullshit so it doesnt come out of left field and Citadel is a fanservice DLC giving you a happy ending with your crew
I unironically take vanilla ME3 over this shit
>I installed the extended cut
There's your problem, that made the ending much more tolerable
If that was the ending we got at launch the backlash wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad
I played the entire trilogy trying to beat the reapers. I got the option to kill them and took it. I got what I wanted. Literally nothing wrong with the ending in that regard
The whole shtick of the ME franchise was that your choices had consequences, that what you had done throughout the franchise would be reflected in the future. So when the ending was basically one recolored cutscene that had nothing to do with that, people were very disappointed. Also, most people disliked the starchild.
And then there was this.
>tfw we'll never get a good ME game again
>tfw we'll never get to play through an ME game as an alien rather than a human a la DA: Origins
it hurts bros
Good. You opened this message. This isn't actually asari military command. They're busy tending to what's left of their planet.
So you survived our fight on Thessia. You're not as weak as I thought. But never forget that your best wasn't good enough to stop me. Now an entire planet is dying because you lacked the strength to win. The legend of Shepard needs to be re-written. I hope I'm there for the last chapter. It ends with your death.
