This is very much a Nitendo thing that percolated out into other games, a meme in the literal sense. A lot of the other musical tropes can be traced back to older pre-vidya ones (like desert level = Arabian music), but as far as I can tell, linking volcanoes/lava/fire with Indian music is a wholly Nintendo invention.
