I remember complaining in 2011 with the 3DS and 2013 with the Vita that Nintendo and Sony's handhelds were failing because they were trying to compete with smartphones for no reason at all. Smartphones can't compete with actual games' quality, and handhelds can't compete with smartphones' gimmicks. Impinging on the other's territory is a sure-fire way for your system to sell.

Also reminder that the only reason the 3ds stopped failing was because nintendo kept forcing it and kept releasing games. The Vita was doomed to fail because it was competing with smartphones for no reason and because it couldn't compete with the 3ds when it had no games.

I love my vita but just look at how succesful a handheld can be nowadays with the Switch now that they stopped trying to shove cameras and 3g and crap like that on there.

Wrong thread kid

The psp was what killed handhelds in the first place. Years of dlc gone

Handhelds killed handhelds. They are expensive, weak, have too many needs, and steal good games away from REAL consoles.

Time to put your pirate hat again i guess

>Real consoles
Oh but i already have a PC.

Handhelds are more traditional than consoles. Ever since the 7th generation home consoles have become weak PC's

handhelds are dead?

Sony killed handhelds only by giving space to mobileshit. You could have released your system but they had to be faggots and make it the expensienst one, at least Nintendo understood.

Yes, we havent had a handheld console in like 6 years

What's the PSvita successor again?

You can still buy and download PSP games from the PSN. If you can't connect your PSP to a wifi network, because you only have WPA2 available, you can download the games to a PS3 and then copy them to the PSP.

am I in the right timeline

>handhelds steal good games away from REAL consoles.
Wrong. Handhelds are where devs can put out games without worrying about meeting the high graphical fidelity that console games are expected to have.
A lot of games that release on handhelds are the type that would never be solely put on consoles cause it would be called cheap.

>dude where am i going to buy digital content for this out of production system
imagine being such a paycuck
do you also still use PSN on PS3?

The Switch is 80% a Vita successor and 20% a 3DS one.

SHUT UP
SHUT UP
SHUT UP
SHUT UP

Considering PSvita got deservingly BTFO most define---

>"People" care more about specs on a console
>Sony shitting all over the exclusive concept
>Nintendo after Iwata
>Paid online and DLC are a thing
>The "average" consumer defends companies first

>at least Nintendo understood.
are we suddenly forgetting the 3DS launching for 250$? the same price that could get you a new PS3/360 at the time

You clearly are forgetting the price cut it got later because of it, dumbshit.

If the Vita didn't have proprietary memory cards and actual first party it would be better than the PSP. It's the definition of wasted potential.
I still use it for Remote Play like once a year, though

yeah after a whole year
im still laughing about the shitty compensation prize they gave to early adopters

Why the fuck would I pay for handhelds when this exist.
Just install PPSSPP download games from freeroms and play what I want.

Switch can’t be replicated though. Nintendo has the power to prop up a console with software and put all of their support into Switch because they had to. Switch was a hail mary project that only worked because they went all in on it.

Imagine unironically thinking that this is a better experience than just buying a psp

The 3DS only stopped failing because of Monster Hunter, followed up by new Pokemon which they gave away for free for buying launch title 3DS games and registering them to Club Nintendo.

If they never did that following the MonHun boom it would have Vita'd.

Vita had a shot, Persona 4 Golden did insane numbers and moved a majority of the units in the handhelds lifetime, but Sony did do a big follow up to capitalize on it because they felt PS+ and other 3rd party games would do it for them.

And yes, in Japan cell phones were absolutely destroying handhelds.

I don't understand

Not an issue, vita never had that. Like it was said in the post first quoted "at least Nintendo understood". Apply yourself, user.

3DS is still thriving, the fuck you smoking?

This is actually true. Mobile games are mostly free to play and even those that cost money cost a pittance compared to handheld games. Earning money through microtransactions is much, much easier.
