No bait, in all seriousness

Is this game truly one of the greatest games ever made? What made it so legendary to the point people were begging for a remake?

I mainly want to hear from those who are its biggest fans. Describe to me the feeling that this game gave that was so great to put it at such a universally acclaimed level.

First final fantasy made for the new hardware of the PS1
First final fantasy to be 3d
Looked good at the time
Told a mature story with diverse cast

>What made it so legendary to the point people were begging for a remake?
Solid story, characters and world materia system was a lot of fun, had a ton of content and looked amazed for its time thanks to the basked in backgrounds, music was great, mini games such as gold saucer stuff and chocobo breeding were beyond what other jrpgs were doing at the time.

oh look it's another "shill has to shit on the original to damage control the dumpster fire remake" thread

For one, Nojima worked on both and talked about how he had to make sacrifices in storytelling and characterization in the original due to limitations present at the time. While Remake will never be a replacement for the original, seeing them show this world and characters with the narrative toolbox games have gotten over the last 20 years was quite an experience. If anyone is buttmad about it not being a prettier version of the original, they can go play that one and if anything, many people who start with Remake will likely check out the original. Considering the ending and the direction their heading, its pretty much mandatory.

That is not final fantasy tactics

honestly, I don’t feel like it offers any perfection in any area people like to praise such as story characters, combat, whatever. and I absolutely love it and will treasure this bideo gaem forever.
it’s just that it feels so nicely packed with everything you’d expect of a JRPG even for casuals who never played any videogame before so I think it’s just a really good entry point for videogames in general

at the time it had some of the best graphics for its genre thats all.

One of the most original JRPGs ever made with likeable characters, great music and you literally play as a bunch of terrorists. What's not to like?

Just got through nibbelheim on my post-remake playthrough. Playing on ps4 and having a ton of fun, but I might have blown my brains out 6 hours into it if it weren’t for the x3 function to get through random battles.
Also I’m occasionally using the no-random-battles function and I think it might be to the games detriment. Started using it after gold saucer because I feel too over-leveled but I’m still breezing through bosses. I remember it being a lot more difficult.

First 3d FF, lots of people played it as a kid. That's all.

>I remember it being a lot more difficult.
I finished FF7 fore the first time earlier today and I didn't find the game difficult at all. Now I didn't do the super bosses or any of the extra stuff to get materia like Knights of The Round or anything, but I was around level 64 when I fought Sephiroth. He was pretty easy too. Overall the game was pretty alright, but the long battle animations were very annoying after a while. I hope FF8 is at least a bit better when it comes to that.

1. The graphics at the time were considered to be great.
2. The story vaguely explains things, and leaves a lot up to interpretation and imagination. Anyone can see the story in a entirely different way.
3. The materia system could be used in a very open and creative way.
4. Each of the cast had a highly detailed backstory that linked parts of the world together, making it feel like a real world that people could live in.
5. The philosophy of the lifestream was interesting, and Sephiroth himself as a villain was interesting and unpredictable. He goes from possibly being a hero by killing the main villain group's leader at the time, to being the unknown threat chasing possibly a myth, to having been a mastermind with influence are many things the player had no idea was possible. The more you learn about Sephiroth, the more you start to wonder, just what in the world exists that he hasn't been a part of yet?
6. Optional characters made you capable of seeing the story entirely different ways.
7. Another highlight that made Sephiroth different from most other FF villains of the time, he used to be a good guy. So many villains of the time were "a natural force of evil" or "evil from existing", but here, we get to see his turn in real time during the flashback at Kalm.

>I hope FF8 is at least a bit better when it comes to that.
heh

If you want it to be hard, but not too hard, you aren't far from that. Avoid getting any enemy skills. Avoid stealing any kinds of weapons or armors. Avoid grinding, turn on no encounters if you feel like its too easy. Don't use Aeris limit breaks. Don't use Choco Mog summon either, in fact get rid of it. Also don't use poison. All of these should help the game be a little harder, but not impossible.

Fuck. I was already a bit weary on this since I have to learn and deal with the Junction system, but now it's going to be just as slow as FF7. I'm still kinda looking forward to this game since I know almost nothing about the story.

Thanks for the great write-up, user. What are your thoughts on the remake?

It's not even the best Final Fantasy

No, that would be Dragon Quest V.

>Is this game truly one of the greatest games ever made?
Yes, but it's also a victim of its own hype. As great as it is, it will never have the effect on those who've been told about how great it is. Like 2001.
What made it so legendary to the point people were begging for a remake?
What said and you really get attached to the characters and world so it's pretty natural to want to see/experience it again with better technology backing it up.

Good taste

>replaying now
>you can chase civilians in the shinra tower lobby
>you can watch a minute long advertisement for the bike in the store
what the FUCK

No, it's shit.

V is overrated as fuck, most people like it just because of its relatability over the sad backstory losing your dad, or because you get to play chad with 3 waifus.
meanwhile 4 already had a proto-Sephiroth years before FF7, while 7 had an absolutely massive story that demolishes at least 90% of all jrpgs

Well thought out post user this is what I was looking for.

the most memorable thing about DQV is the rape horse

All these parts are pure kino -

the villain used to being a good guy or turning back is nothing new.
Leon in 2 and Golbez in 4 were just like that. also despite Kefka never being properly “good”, it was later revealed he was just a normal guy before turning batshit crazy, just like Sephiroth did

imagine a game with a literal globe you can circumnavigate either by submarine or airship, and the game also lets you drive a dope buggy, snowboard, drive a motorbike, and ride chocobos.

the destinations were gorgeous pre-rendered backgrounds, and there were plenty of them.

with some fun characters and 50/10 music playing. with a crazy story that had some really cool bits.

the imagine how mad I am at this garbage remake.

Its clearly a Nomura fanfiction. In the original, the danger of Shinra is first undercut after the first Jenova fight on the cargo ship. That is the moment in the game that most fans realized "Shinra cannot compare to this, this is science gone out of control, this is a creature from beyond the starts, a being that is clearly too powerful to be controlled. You realize its a miracle that it hasn't taken over the planet already by now. You wonder how Shinra was even able to capture it in the first place." Here, the threat of Shinra is undercut before you even reach Sephiroth, its clear the time ghosts are more powerful then Shinra is. The ghosts make Hojo look helpless. The ghosts make Rufus look powerless. The ghosts take away a lot of dread and suspense from the other threats that are long running threats. There is also a conflict of interest, Nomura states the game is for people who have never played the original before, yet he states in a interview that Sephiroth shouldn't be a mystery because he is already well know to fans of the original. What it comes down to is this, Kingdom Hearts made too much money. It has a more consistent record, safer record, and repeatable record then the Final Fantasy series as a whole does. Everyone was afraid SQ would take the thirst for a remake, and exploit it instead of satisfying both old and new fans. But instead, we got a game that explains nothing to new fans, as it shreds some of the best parts that old fans enjoyed. It satisfies nobody. Its Marvel sequel bait. Its taking a single game, and trying to make a long running franchise out of it. Just watch, the next game will NOT be Final Fantasy 7 Remake 2, it will be Final Fantasy 7 Remake 1.5.

True true, but Kefka really didn't turn batshit crazy, it was due to short circuit malfunction of the mind control crown.
