Just finished the original, didn't touch the Remake yet. The underwhelming story, combat, characters really contrasted against how great the music was. 7's soundtrack is godtier but everything else really is objectively garbage. And it's not just because of its age either, I recently beat other (J)rpgs in the same era that have better gameplay and more charming characters. System Shock 1 came out 3 years prior and that game's actual roleplaying elements and atmosphere completely shit on all those other jrpgs too. I can appreciate older games but FF7 really seems like the epitome of "You've had to have played it when you were a kid".
Is FF7 only "amazing" due to nostalgia?
>setting where everyone uses guns and magic
>MC uses a sword
do japs fear the gun?
How is the story underwhelming?
It's a downgrade from 6 in nearly every way
I played it recently and I liked it. So blow it out your ass.
oh it's another "shills have to shit on the original to damage control the remake" thread
It was an amazing game back then and it is still great today.
Clouds mental issues are pretty interesting, but overall the story is pretty shit. The music and direction/timing of the music is amazing, like Sephiroth saying out of my way, I'm going to see my mother, then the music kicks in. Things like that are fantastic.
Still. Shit gameplay and mediocre story overall. WEAPONS are fucking stupid.
My first 2 jrpgs were FF7 and Breath of Fire 3, always like BoF 3 more.
>actual roleplaying elements
if i wanted these i'd just play tabletop
trying to copy that in a video game would be such a waste of time
FF7 is heralded as the best jrpg of its era, so it's valid for me to criticize its roleplaying elements and compare them to other rpgs.
If you can't even be bothered explaining why it's bad why should we bother explaining why it's good? Which it is, all of it.
no rpg game has good roleplaying is my point
it's pointless to even bother
This
I can't remember any remake where it was this bad?
>soundtrack is godtier but everything else really is objectively garbage
character design is also pretty good. i agree on the other points, though.
I like it. I don't care if people don't like it. World keeps on spinnin'.
>Cloud's mental issues are pretty interesting
It would have been if they delved deeper into it instead of making all of those scenes the run-of-the-mill amnesiac anime character bullshit. I didn't like Xenogears that much, but the protag's mental state in that was more interesting along with the main plot. I'm not gonna lie, I only played about 3 Final Fantasy games but I can see that writing is not the series' strong suit. I wanted to love FF7, even bought a physical copy instead of just emulating it but the game really didn't deliver in any aspect except music.
I can't think of any shit characters from FFVII. They're all memorable.
Vincent feels like the type of character that is neat in the source material but fucking unbearable in any sort of spinoff
system shock 1 doesn't even have RPG elements, it's like a sci-fi STALKER on a space station with no merchants where you just scavenge shit off corpses. What RPG elements does it have? voiced dialogue clips being emailed to you? You don't even have conversations.
7 still had minor improvements over 6, so I wouldn't call it a downgrade. 7 has a lot of gorgeous designs and its music is superior to 6's. It's just a shame everything else about it won't impress anyone above the age of 9.
I never said people have to dislike it either, no need to be super defensive and talk about the world spinnin.
>It's just a shame everything else about it won't impress anyone above the age of 9.
>I never said people have to dislike it either, no need to be super defensive and talk about the world spinnin.
Not OP, but...
>Let's go after Sephiroth! Why? Uhm, he is probably up to no good? No I am totally not being manipulated to follow him or anything. Dudes and dudettes trust me! Yeah even you Tifa who looks at me super doubtful about my story just now! And let's also ignore the Kalm, Corel, and Niebelheim reactor we pass by instead of bombing them as we usually do, especially the last one after learning how much damage they do from Cosmo Canyon!
>Oh look Hojo sits there defenseless. Kill him? Nah it'd be against good manners to kill one of our dangerous foes while he is enjoying vacation! Totally won't come back to bite us!
>Hey we just beat up that bald Turk. Kill him and be rid off him forever? Nah let's just let him lie unconscious here instead of finishing him off, we only kill off non-named characters!
>Cloud suddenly and completely out of nowhere learned some kind of ghost magic to follow Sephiroth into the livestream to finish him off - wow another KH-kind of convoluted Nomura writ- I mean IT'S KINO, yea TOTALLY KINO, YEAH!
People forget that FFVII certainly has some flaws that are overlooked due to nostalgia.
You might be paid to make these threads but I'm not gonna change my mind about VII-2.
For me it was always about the characters and music than the overall plot of the game. There really hadn't been a protagonist as well written as Cloud before or even after imo.
>Why? Uhm, he is probably up to no good?
He talks directly of the Promised Land and ruling the Planet
>wow another KH-kind of convoluted Nomura writ- I mean IT'S KINO, yea TOTALLY KINO, YEAH!
Oh, you're just another fag trying to defend the remake, never mind the rest then
That’s pretty nit picky. The overall story is good.
>. There really hadn't been a protagonist as well written as Cloud before or even after imo.
lol. He has no personality of his own.
Cloud's story is legit good.
Music is very good.
The gameplay is just normal JRPG trash.
People thought it of it as a religious experience at the time because the fully rendered stuff was very good, the in-battle graphics and effects were new and cool (e.g. using a summon like Bahamut was jaw dropping in 1997), and because it was heavily, heavily advertised in ways we'd never seen before, like during movie trailers in the theater, which made it feel like it transcended gaming.
I would never find fault in some zoomer getting nothing out of it.
7 defined a whole generation when it came out and now does it again.
6 never did any of that and will always be the retarded cousin game.
you're looking at it through the lens of 2020, a lot of what it did was a first, or at least the first of it's kind to hit massively.
And because of that everything it did right has been done again elsewhere, so it will feel stale and uninspired where in 1997 it was something entirely new and different.
guns feel weak or feel like cheating because they cause damage unrelated to physical strength whereas swords imply an aptitude in dexterity and strength to function corrrectly.
guns weak
sword stronk
Also OP is full of shit and 7R is the most polished combat since DMC5
No.
>because it was heavily, heavily advertised in ways we'd never seen before, like during movie trailers in the theater, which made it feel like it transcended gaming.
I completely forgot about that
And now I remember spirits within
Play the game or just don't post about it
>Remake fags shitting on OG FF7 to defend Nomura
I fucking hate this generation of gamers.
>He has no personality of his own.
thats because his personality is a projection of someone else because of a traumatic expierence.
I don't understand why people have to compare them, they're two completely different games.
Nojima wrote this not Nomura
brainlet and cringe post
>I never said people have to dislike it either, no need to be super defensive and talk about the world spinnin.
you kinda did tho
>7's soundtrack is godtier but everything else really is objectively garbage.
It absolutely is all nostalgia but that's okay. FFVII was my life but I couldn't even replay it nowadays due to how badly it aged..not the best game but the ideas and characters are very iconic for a reason.
The thing i hated the most about the game is the fucking Mario Party mini games thrown in almost every major story segment
>I played other JRPGs
>proceeds to compare FF7 to System Shock
