Based
I'm too old now. I can't play linear rpg, they just bore me to death, and I loved them when I was younger
S'fine.
at least they finally got rid of random battles(mostly).
>tfw DQ8 on the 3ds is about 30 hours shorter than DQ8 on the ps2 even though it has more content
fucking random battles this comparision opened my eyes
BD2 is going to be a dumpster fire if the demo is any indication
God bless that OP is still making threads in the 'Gay Twitter Screencap' genre
>turn-BASED
It's in the name boys.
used to love them as a kid, now they bore me to death
>tfw DQ8 on the 3ds is about 30 hours shorter than DQ8 on the ps2 even though it has more content
Hollleeee shiet. I kinda avoided DQ8 on PS2 because random battles looked needlessy, ridiculously long. Maybe I'll pick it up on 3DS.
inferior to 3 niggas in a row
I wish ATB was still a thing
ATB was high-test.
4 is too many party members. Should be 3 max
>3 niggas
>4 niggas
>5 niggas
This is the holy trinity
Anything below or above is cursed
i'm honestly not too keen on 4. 3 and 5 are great though
I enjoy the genre, but I feel like a lot of the recent attempts have been mediocre at best. I miss the PS1 and PS2 era where these titles were frequent and decent.
>3 niggas
Classic and functional.
>4 niggas
Great and speaks volumes of the combat system.
>5 niggas
Ascended to chess-tier levels of strategic combat.
It's the best rpg combat around.
It amazes me how normies and journos will treat Persona 5 like God's gift to videogames and praise it endlessly and act like it's one of the best games of this generation, then a month later whenever any new non-mainstream JRPG comes out they go on and on about how turnbased games are bad and boring and outdated and need to be changed for modern audiences. I don't think they're shills, but I just can't wrap my head around why P5 gets such special treatment in the eyes of normies while everything else gets shit on.
But to answer the question, I love those games and I'm glad at least some still get made. Bravely Default checks so many of my boxes and I really hope the new one is good.
This is why RTS died, brainlets like this
For me, it's the '5 niggas in two rows' genre.
They're not shills they're mongs. NPC-tier normalfag mongs who don't know anything about the topic they're talking about.
Suikoden had 6 if I remember correctly and that game was based.
>5 niggas
what games other than ff4 do this? 5 niggas is dope
Y'all scrubs...
>6 niggas in a row
Calm down son, we're not ready for a new renaissance yet.
This. I love turn based RPGs but random encounters have ALWAYS been fucking ass. Always popping up constantly when I don't want them, but when I go to farm random encounters for stuff like drops or a rare enemy/extra boss, the fuckers are nowhere to be found. Overworld with enemy model encounters was the best shit to ever happen to the genre.
Please dont use the N word, its racist
It a worn out genre. It's existed for nearly 40 years and there isn't really much more that can be done with it. Turned based JRPGs peaked in the 90's and plateaued ever since.
3 is too few to be interesting imo
5 is the absolute best and going from 5 to 4 between FFIV and FFV and then again down to 3 in VII is a fucking travesty
Lost Odyssey had it for sure
What N word my nigger?
that's not a row pal
Peaked in the early 2000's*
>but I just can't wrap my head around why P5 gets such special treatment in the eyes of normies while everything else gets shit on.
Probably because battles in P5 are super fast outside of boss battles. The UI was also designed in a way that it's super quick to access anything.
The best system is just adding a button to turn off and on random encounters
Because persona is just mature pokemon
>police niggas
Is oxymoron the word I'm looking at
Basically awful. The genre doesn't seriously try to grow or add depth, but just constantly makes up new gimicks that ultimately do the same thing, making it seem fresh and complex through obscurity each game.
'Fundamental' conventions like even having leveling up rob developers of all incentive to make battle around clever decision making, since such 'RPG elements' mean that devs can never go "ok, this move will kill x in n hits, so using it in y situations is necessary to win this battle given you're using this strategy". Having characters 'in a row' will typically mean that not only is there no positioning or tactics that could make use of it, but also that enemies will typically randomly attack whatever party member they feel like, meaning that the outcome will frequently b heavily determined by rng if your in a situation that's legitimately 'hard', in that every move counts so you don't die.
There are very few I can think of that go "5 niggas"-tier. It requires a special kind of mind to balance combat around that many characters and variables.
people just like it because wow the menus look so cool lol!!!
it’s all a fad
This might be the most low-IQ post I've read in a while.
You can be turn-based without being a boring generic JRPG. Adding movement alone does wonders.
7 swappable niggas is the best
SaGa games in general does 5 team member groups.
can this shit be emulated somehow?
There’s nothing mature about a game designed to be an escapist fantasy for losers with no friends, where the girls slobber all over the main character’s dick just because they’re written that way
I think SRPGs or fully open movement in combat in a true 3d environment should have become standard a long time ago. Just having row basically turns a game into a cutscene simulator, there's so little going on under the hood so they distract players with mountains of visual flair and long animations.
Believe it or not yes, it's actually getting there: youtube.com
i think people need to stop speaking like fucking retards.
Are you perhaps also among the, "Why doesn't the mmo boss just teleport the healers into the sun?" crowd?
Besides there are plenty challenges in the genre that are exactly counted down to the turn and they always suck ass.
>partylets
18 niggas in a row was my jam
Yeah, the 90s introduced a lot of good concepts to the genre, which all got fleshed out in the early 2000s
This. I don't get why faggots act like the only option for turn-based is Four Niggas in a Row.
When are we gonna get an RPG that lets you control 4 niggas in a row separated into 3 individual nigga rows for a total of 12 niggas in a row?
Fine then it's just m rated pokemon then you fucking nigger
boring as fuck.
SRPGs always felt like the natural evolution of turn-based combat to me too. Not just controlling the action but the movement before and after the action too.
I am still kinda surprised SRPGs have become turbo-niche while traditional "X niggas in a row" games live on.
Too bad you can't fucking play the game without a fucking walkthrough.
The world is not ready for this user.
see
Lmao don’t get angry just because I said the truth
To be fair the monster mechanics in Persona are a bit better than in Pokémon, that’s why SMT is better, it’s Persona without the cringe I love you Joker uguu~ bullshit
SRPGs aren't turbo-niche, there's just not very many of them being made.
Fire Emblem and XCOM are quite popular. I'd say SRPGs are in a better state than traditional RTS honestly.
Problem is that you don't have control over any of them. All they get is random actions and god help you if you kill 2 beetles too many or the game is pretty much officially over.
The last Remnant is better
EIGHTEEN (18) NIGGAS
everyone knows 6 is best. thats why suikoden 2 is tthe best game ever made.
>he doesn't enjoy the 7 nigga madness of SO5
ATB was and is terrible, fuck you
>3 niggas party
>13 niggas total
>not exp if they aren't in the active party
>Story forces to use specific characters at some point
>Even force you to use one alone at somepoints
What does being old have to do with that?
Based as fuck
couldn't you always just use items/skills to reduce encounters?
>that Star Ocean game with like 8 niggas on field at the same time
I only called it "mature" because it was rated m way to miss the point you dumb fuck
Why?
Strategy RPGs do take a bit more time to balance and work out than a bog standard turn based one, what with all the individual characters, units and classes you'd be working with.
You'd be underleveled, no?
I prefer 6 niggas myself.
>he doesn't regularly rotate party members in every game even if it has XP sharing.
Never gonna make it bro
I liked what dragon quest xi did, 4 niggas but the niggas in reserve could be brought in to replace a nigga in the battle line mid battle
Boring.
I agree wit you wholeheartedly my nigga
Etrian Odyssey
>SMT V never ever
Star Ocean 5 is BASED
>4 niggas in the row
So, might&magic series?
As the other guy put it, kill 2 beetles too many and it's over.
Maybe you can beat the game somehow but you will never in your lifetime beat all the extra content without one.
i think it only prevents monsters below your level from appearing, and then you can just level on metal slimes when they show up
Too bad the rest of the game ate shit.
>and god help you if you kill 2 beetles too many or the game is pretty much officially over.
I was interested in the game but what is wrong with it?
