They had the perfect chance to make him morally grey, a man who legit cares about doing what's best for Midgar, but got lost in his messiah complex and 4D chess match. Like, I could understand his son acting this way because he's young and was raised to be a rich asshole, but I felt like they could have done more with President Shinra, he was the man who was basically the main villain of the whole game now.
He even had a legit point about Avalanche being completely fucked after the fall of Shinra, because the people of Midgar certainly wouldn't approve of them taking away their comfy livestyle.
I feel like this was done solely because they wanted the main cast to be 100% in the right for going after him.
Fuck Time Jannies and Zack, this is what pissed me off the most.

It's like you completely ignored the part where he told Barret he was full of shit. President Shinra is an asshole and absolutely not a morally grey character, you can't really do that to a guy who destroys not one but two residential sectors for very little payoff for him. But in Remake in particular he serves to expose Barret's hypocrisy to himself, which is a pretty strong addition to "Shit president Shinra actually does." The fact that it happens because somehow he's hanging off the edge of the building is really goddamn stupid, but so is a lot of stuff.
