ITT: Niche-ass PS1 games

I'd slap this on /vr/ but I feel like that board will take forever to get replies so PS1 thread, post games

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

/vr/ split was a mistake

Is that Steve?

I never managed to get far with this game, but I played the shit out of it when I was in high school when it came out. Same with R-Type Delta and Omega Boost.

The visuals to this day are still really stylish and cool, and judging by what I've since read on shmup forums, it's one of the harder shmups (partly for bad reasons because of the cluttered visual style that makes it hard to distinguish between the background and bullets flying at you).

Also, here's another niche game. I never actually played it but remember the title because I remember being at my cousin's house and seeing him play it.
I still remember the "MONKEEEY" female announcer voice whenever you got a power up or something like that.
That voice has never left my head. I just keep remembering it every time I see people mention Sun Wukong or anything related to Journey to the West.

never played your game but it reminded me of pic related. I never played this either, only a demo and it was pretty cool

Last one from me: Do the Rampage games count as niche? I played so much of these games on PS1 after school and managed to beat each of the them several times.

Looking back, my younger self had so much time to play these games, because my current self would not have the patience to play Rampage games because of how janky and bullshit they are.

Pic related was actually the first game I got for my psx. It's a JP action-platformer where you take the roles of compy, human, raptor, and finally t-rex. Switching between the different characters keeps things fresh, as they all have their own special attributes, attacks, and approach to navigating through the levels. Collectables that can be found in secret paths/areas or that require tricky platforming and skill add a nice bit of depth to gameplay and replay value - that is, if you can actually beat the game. It's fucking tough. I think the farthest I made it without cheats was deep into the raptor stages. The game also has superb graphics and sound effects for a ps1 game, as well as its very own orchestral soundtrack made specifically for the game.

>pic related
Oh how embarrassing

I love Destrega. It's a shame the genre never got popular since i enjoyed the hell out of it when i was a kid. Well, i suppose arena fighters are some sort of spiritual successor... kinda.

Koudelka was based too.

Pic related. On dreamcast too but I don't think anyone's ever heard of it

Balance was completely fucked in that game though, it never was going to take off

holy fucking based. this is in my top 5 be ps1 games and actually did the series right in 3d. I can't believe more people don't talk about this game

yeah i never beat this still, I went to emulate it one time but couldnt find a working iso, the vibes in this game tho

Me? I'm the Birdman.

I remember owning the long vertical case version of this. Don't think I ever made it too far as I found it super unsettling to play. Even the MC was a la creatura

this looks like the shining meets shutter island, this is definitely niche

Holy shit I thought I was the only one I played this. I just remember the dinosaurs had that eye slit mechanic.

N64 versions are better.

Threads of Fate needs more love.

Yeah it was definitely weird. I went in thinking it'd be another survival horror of the time but wasn't expecting point n click. I remember the second game either never made it to the West or it was censored because it had tentacle throat rape or something.

Adventure of little ralph

Only ever played this game once, and I didn't know wtf I was doing. I rented it from a indie dvd/video game rental place.

Do you guys know any good games to challenge for Game Center CX? Fans (even westerners) can submit games ideas. The submit form is the joystick button. First form is name, second game, third arcade to visit.

This game should have seen a release in NA.

I still didn't know how to break control from that main antagonist in the end game. I'm trying not doing anything but the main antagonist killed all of my party anyway. Rage quiting after that. Probably should look at some guide though, i suspect i need to equip something.

This game is better than all 2D Mario games combined

Mobygames has nice big scans of covers if you care about that sort of thing.

About this game, I think the fairest description would be "plate balancing simulator". You fly over each of the open 3d levels where depending on the mission you have to do several of the following:
Keep yourself alive (duh, but you will take a beating and repairs take time)
Shoot down invaders for resources/research
Protect your base
Protect mission buildings and travelling vehicle convoys
Save civilians either by escorting them to bases or shuttling them directly in your cargo hold
Transport mission objective items around
Transport and place useful items for your own benefit to wherever you think they will help you the most such as turrets

Using the research points you can unlock new weapons and better specialised ships suited to various tasks with different configurations of cargo space, weapon mounts, speed, HP etc. Controls will take you a little time to get familiar with (guaranteed you will beam a human from your cargo to somewhere a few 100 feet above the ground more than once) and there is no way to grind outside of doing each level one time so if you keep barely winning without gathering many resources it can get unreasonably difficult. However, knowing this in advance it can go the other way as you deliberately drag levels out and farm for the best equipment early, meaning you get to farm even better with the fancy ships and weapons sooner. Here is a vid of the demo that will make more sense than my ramblings of how it all ties together.

Niche games or lesser known untranslated games?

A suprisingly good RPG with a evolving pet

I used to play this one with my dad.

That game is complete ass but it's somehow fascinating. I'll never play it but I watched some gameplay.
