What you guys think of this new trend of ps1 styled indie games
The fuck is this a picture of?
Name some
name 5 (one)
Fucking awful
Can we just post cryptids?
whats that from
>PS1 style
>hardly any of them use texture warping
>filtered textures
>postprocessing or other effects that wouldn't have been available at the time
yeah most of them are trash, dawg.
yiik
they're fine, i usually grab something featured on alpha beta gamer
Lost in vivo, the entire ps1 horror demo disc, and the wretched weekend jam?
Personally I'm a big fan of bvb that single month where Horror Fishing was the big new theme
Literally every single one is some low-effort "proof of concept" with two original assets plugged into some shitty stock Unity framework.
i love it all my favorite content creators and influencers are playing them and reacting really funny and scared haha

pcgamer.com
I could post lots more but you won't even bother looking at those 2 links, LOL.
It never really works, it always feels "off", like simultaneously too complicated and too simple. It's indie pixel art all over again, where it's very obviously being used as a shortcut in 99% of cases.
Devil Daggers had alright gameplay I guess.
>ps1 styled
>yiik
Retard
This stuff was from 2 years ago, and even then, most of them are shit. Sirenhead for example, was so fucking short it made Slender look like a full fucking game.
What did he mean by this?
It's shit. Megaphonehead and muh team deathmatch psx version do not need the HAHA FAKE PSX GRAPHICS WHAOO to be horror games. The second one feels gimmicky as fuck and the "game" it's based on is fake as fuck and kicks me out of the immersion. Neat game though.
If you want psx spooky shit use more prerendered backgrounds, forced cameras and poligonal messes, not make Slender and put a filter on it.
>Lost in vivo
That looks nothing like a PS1 game. The HL1 port looked substantially worse, for example. LIV looks more like an HL2 mod (I know it's Unity)
christ
None of them are full games these guys need to take their fuckin time instead of pumping out shit for youtubers to play once and forget about in a week
It's an excuse to skimp on production quality.
>can't make good assets
>try to make low poly assets instead
>can't make good low poly assets either so hide everything behind a VHS filter
>What did he mean by this?
What I meant is that while Sirenhead was a good experiment, it was misleading to me and many others by the length of it. While these horror games are cool and all, there has not been anything decently long to really call a game out of this. They are more of tech demos.
Night of the Consoomers is pretty Based. Unironically the true horror experience
Well, there is this one
>youtu.be
Looks very neat and has almost everything the ps1 REs had; graphics, tank controls, bad voice acting, it is only missing collective files.
>A single YouTube channel that just features random small indie games basically popularized the trend by making a video about a 15 minute long horror game with a "deep story"
Trend sucks. Alpha Beta Gamer is pretty cool, though. That dude digs up some cool finds.
I like the concept, I think the aesthetic serves horror well, but there aren't many good ones.
There was a demo for a game called Paracuscia that was really good but the dev's been silent since 2018.
the style is pretty good apart from the bearded guy
sirenhead
Looks a bit like Paratropic
this one actually looks pretty decent if they can keep the theming up. that puppet merchant is a nice touch also
